A word from the CEO

It has been an incredible summer behind the scenes at the MGroup Stadium with positive changes both on and off the pitch.

For CEO Justin Merritt, who first arrived at the club as a player/Assistant Manager back in 2005 the progress that The Hoops make year-on-year is remarkable

“There is a huge contrast” he told us. “There was nothing here when I first arrived. It was a case of turning the floodlights around and on to a bit of grass and then it was like training and playing under candlelight! But even then it was home after the club had spent years playing in parks and dreaming of having their own ground.

“Since then every year we've tried to make subtle changes, introducing things and growing the club in a sustainable way. Some years there have been big changes, such as the 3G pitches, or it may be that we focus on the education programmes or facilities for our disabled teams. Even last year by bringing in the new Velocity building that helped us provide great facilities for the students on site every day but also helped us with hospitality on matchdays.

“This summer fans will see the new clubhouse or the walkway to the ground but might not see the fantastic new workspace in our performance centre for the analysts.  There's been a lot of hard work in all areas all summer.

“I think what we're always aiming to do is give the best facilities that we can,  not just for the Mens and Women's first team, but also other users like Oxford United and also our own junior and youth teams So when they come to the ground they can feel proud of the club they play for.

“I’m not going to lie, for many years it's been hard work,  just to be able to keep things going, but this summer we have had some investment and they share our passion for what the club means to everyone. We were absolutely  determined to use that investment equally across everything that happens at the MGroup Stadium.

“Obviously we want a successful first team, and a women’s team playing at the highest possible level but there is more functional thinking about how we use each of the spaces we have and making those more appealing. There has been so much hard work but we've still got more plans for everyone to see as well”.

The growth and investment isn’t just limited to the players and the stadium, Justin is just as happy to continue to invest in good people to help all of those good things happen.

“Absolutely. Last week we brought in Kelly and Shelley, two important appointments, as Community and Commercial leads and we have appointed Aliyah as Full Time Manager of the Women’s side, which is a fantastic appointment.  How do we develop our community provision, how do we develop our commercial partners? How do we generate revenue?

“We've also for the first time got three young members of staff, James, Matt and Henry on a new AI Practitioner program that looks at the function of the club and how we can automate the system,  provide dashboards and so on. So we're thinking across the club as a business and as an education centre, and primarily as a football club as well”.

Justin’s passion for Oxford City is obvious to all. So how has his role changed after the summer investment. No longer the sole owner, how is he settling into life as CEO?

“I don't really feel it's changed dramatically other than I have to check-in on a few more calls!” he laughs

“I think I've always felt pretty responsible,  making sure everything is working as we want it to.  We're passionate about things, we want to drive the club forward, you know, and we’ll never be complacent about making that happen. So for me, it hasn't changed a massive amount other than technically I have a boss, which is great.

“The new investors share our vision and only want to help us drive that forward, We all want to keep the same DNA that everyone tells us makes Oxford City such a great football club to be part of.”

Oxford City Women

Oxford City Women are approaching their new season in good shape with the big kick off away at FLeet this Sunday

Manager Aliyah Anthony told us:

“We started back very early because we have a lot of new players and we wanted to integrate them alongside the core group who have done so well for us over the last couple of seasons.

“We have a number of experienced players joining which is important given that so many of our players have come through the Velocity programme and are talented young players who will benefit from having teammates around them from different backgrounds, different clubs and whose path may well have been very different to theirs.

“We have added Benson to our coaching staff, someone with loads of experience after working at Bournemouth, and also Rob Cooper of ARC Performance has been working very hard this summer testing the players and making sure that our sports science and performance data is spot on

“It was all been very carefully put together, we have played well in our friendlies and now it’s all about putting the final touches to everything before the first game, away at Fleet before our first home game, against Portchester on 13th September.”

MAximum Velocity

Eddie Odhiambo on Academy progress with Velocity

It’s a big week for the latest group of scholars to enter the Velocity Education programme here at the MGroup Stadium.

Established in 2020, hundreds of youngsters have now graduated, some continuing their path into football and others moving into other roles in full time work, as Eddie Odhiambo told us

"Last season finished with everyone completing their qualifications and getting their results back and then there was further exploration of their  next destinations

“For some they returned back to us, we helped others find pastures new. That's a really enjoyable part of Velocity for me,  seeing where learners go next and the sheer variety of roles they can go to.

“t's always great when I get an email requesting a reference for whatever job or role it is or education setting. We take a lot of pride in that, in getting those references,  I'm also saying I always talk about football last!

.“We are trying to set them up to be able to deal with life, to make sure they have a pathway through to education, employment or training, and then it just so happens that they might be able to play in football at a high level as well!

“We have a really strong pass rate success rate for our Level 3 programme, extended diploma. We are consistently a top performer within our region, for attendance, for outcomes, and so on. That happens consistently, and we maintain relationships where we're effectively building an alumni of Velocity learners. It’s fantastic when they come back and tell us about their stories, which they do, which we build into our programme; people who are excellent in their field of excellence, coming back to share their pathways".

Football wise it’s been good this summer to see Kauan and Max Treml staying on a football apprentices, with Sophie Lester, Yas Edwards and a number of other girls following the well-trodden path from Velocity into the Women’s First Team Squad.

“ Yes, and  Tyrae and Aydin Ulas as well who are both in the first team squad at the moment. They just happened to take every opportunity that was given to them in terms of developing themselves physically and their attitudes were just first-rate, They had an excellent fixture program with our under19s and they gave themselves every opportunity

“That's why we've continued our investment into them as young people.

“And the girls program has seen Aliyah have a massive influence on those players. She's won a league and then finished the highest place they’ve ever finished in the league above. All our girls are fortunate to have her and to have a genuine pathway to play senior football".

At which point does the new cohort start to take shape?

“Recruitment is ongoing. We recruit predominantly from our own internal junior youth teams and local schools, so recruitment is perpetual, where we go into schools and the career evenings and have our own open evenings

“The new group report back on September 1st. They've already been in through the summer for pre season, which is like an informal integration into velocity and allows them to have a look at the environment they're coming into, and allows us to get ahead in terms of assessing our squads and seeing what relationships can be built on, so when day one arrives, it's not day one because they've already been in here”

"The way this site works with multiple departments going on, it's been very busy this term this summer, It's been a really hectic summer but having the learners in at that time when we don't need to, we choose to do this, because it’s the right thing to do, to get some off their sofas after the exam period.  And it reassures them as well. Support and safeguarding, well-being and welfare that's taken into consideration before they get on site, while they're on-site, and beyond when they leave.”

So, finally, if there’s anyone out there wondering what to do next, is it too late to come and join us and continue their education?

“No. It's always worth enquiring because I'll support anyone to find any young person an appropriate place, so it's always worth an inquiry as to opportunity.
