THE GAFFER

Ross Jenkins

It’s good to be back at home today and to face another really good test against a strong Fylde team looking to bounce back into the National League at the first time of asking. That’s never easy and brings its own type of pressure but they have coped with that all season and it’s up to us to put a dent in their hopes this afternoon.

We know we are more than capable of doing that and the last home game against Buxton only underlined what we are all about. We showed unbelievable character to keep going like that and to score the winner in the last minute was a fitting reward for the effort the players put into that game. Not great for the nerves but I’ll settle for that sort of excitement again today.

We then travelled up to Macclesfield in a really tricky game where we were facing a team who had caused probably the greatest FA Cup upset this Century to beat the holders Crystal Palace in their last match! That would have been hard enough without illness adding to one or two injuries in our squad. Again, I thought we were excellent and had opportunities to get the crucial first goal but then they scored three goals late in the 90 minutes to give the scoreline a slightly unfair look, I felt.

With no midweek game we have had chance to get one or two of those missing players rested and back in action and we have also added a couple of new faces in Jonny Maxted and Evan Humphries. Johnny won this league last year and will add experience as well as competition: Sam Lewis has been excellent this season and we now have two senior players pushing each other all the way as well as young Max Treml who has done ever so well this season. It’s the same with Evan, and with Aaron Harper-Bailey who joined the other week: we now have competition in key areas and that is only going to help us. We are working hard to bring in other players too as we approach the sharp end of the season.

Finally, a thank you from all of us in the Dressing Room for your fantastic support against Buxton. What a noise and what scenes when that winner went in. Play your part again today and get behind the team from first whistle to last.

Numbers Game
AFC Fylde

The Fylde Coast is the north west bit of seaside between the rivers Ribble and Wyre, with Blackpool in the centre, Fleetwood in the north and Lytham to the south.

£18m That was the cost of the club’s  Mill Farm Sports Village, on the outskirts of Wesham, close to junction 3 of the M55. The facility includes community sports pitches, sports science facilities, and a 6,000-capacity Football League standard stadium. The stadium includes a 2,000 capacity all-seater main stand with a supporters' bar, executive boxes and a function room. The ground opened on 13th  August 2016 for the club's first National League North match of the season against Brackley Town.

21 Between January 2003 and October 2004, the club did not lose one match in any competition, a remarkable record that spanned 21 months.

7 Previous boss Mick Fuller  led the side to seven West Lancs League Premier Division titles, three consecutive Northern Inter-Counties Cup wins, five Richardson Cup triumphs, and four Lancs Amateur Shield wins. The pinnacle of his managerial reign came at Wembley in the FA Vase Final and winning at Wembley.

4 The club won four promotions between 2007 and 2017 to earn promotion to the fifth tier of English football for the first time. The club experienced two play-off campaigns in their first two seasons in the National League, with the second seeing them miss out on promotion to the Football League after losing to Salford City at Wembley Stadium in the play-off final.

1 In 2019 Fylde won the FA Trophy, defeating Leyton Orient. They are the first and so far only club to win both the FA Vase and the FA Trophy.

380 Miles as a round trip today, centre spot to centre spot using the M6 toll. We welcome the fans of AFC Fylde and hope you enjoy the game.

A MOMENT IN TIME

A Decision that changed the City of Dreaming Spires

On July 16th 1948 a decision was made that changed the course of football in the city of Oxford forever.

At that time Oxford City were the most prominent amateur team in the city, with their White House Ground drawing decent crowds in the Isthmian League  and the team finishing runners up in the previous Oxon Senior Cup in front of 7,796 fans.

The issue was that the team that beat them in that Senior Cup were the upstart ‘Boys From Up the Hill’, Headington United, whose Chairman Vic Couling was driving them forward,  backed by a thriving Supporters Club and ambitions of turning professional.

On that evening at Oxford Town Hall the City Members heard a proposition that the club should consider turning professional. One of the main points was that in the past many players had left to join the professional ranks and it was considered that by turning professional the club would stand a better chance of retaining these players.

After a lengthy discussion the motion was overwhelmingly defeated. Only seven members voted in favour. A proposition to appoint a full-time salaried manager was also rejected.

Meanwhile Couling urged Headington to turn professional but was similarly rebuffed.

That pivotal 48/49 season  season saw City enjoy one of their most successful FA Cup runs. After defeating Henley Town, Bicester Town, Huntley & Palmers, Maidenhead United and Banbury Spencer they finally lost to Hereford United, the Southern League professional side, 4-3, after extra time. The winning goal came from a penalty almost in the last minute of extra time.  In the Amateur Cup a record crowd of 9,756 saw Leytonstone win easily by 6 goals to 1.

Once again at the  A.G.M,  held in June, 1949, a proposition was put forward that the club engage the services of a full-time team manager/coach, but this was again defeated.

An amendment was put forward by Mr. D. E. Phillips, that the services of a full-time team coach be engaged, and was carried by 78 votes to 48. Mr. Bert Edens had been very opposed to this idea and was compelled to resign his position as Secretary. Former Reading captain George Johnson, successfully coaching in Holland, was duly appointed but the bigger decision came later in that same season when,  for the second time in two years, the club was called upon to consider the possibility of turning professional, and an extraordinary General Meeting was held on April 5th, 1950. Another lengthy debate resulted but the proposition was defeated by 200 votes to 64.

Meanwhile, in Headington, Couling finally got his way and Headington United turned professional upon election to the Southern League in 1949, appointing Harry Thompson as full-time Player-Manager the following season.

The change in status had immediate effects and OUFC author and Historian Martin Brodetsky says:

“Headington had been dynamic and the fans were building the Manor Ground but that change to professional was the key moment, The following season two of City’s best players, Cliff Nugent and Peter Sharman, jumped ship - why wouldn’t you when Headington were paying decent wages and clearly on the up? That decision, plus the one to change name to Oxford United a decade later were two of the biggest in the club’s history.”

Initially City continued to do well as amateurs with good crowds and cup runs but by 1951/2 there was a clear difference: only six wins from 26 games highlighted this and by 1954 they were having to apply for re-election to the Isthmian League…

If the Committee had pre-empted their noisy neighbours on July 16th 1948 and voted to become the first professional team in Oxford then football in our city might have been very different…

AARON JOINS THE HOOPS

TThere’s another new face in the Oxford City squad today as Evan Humphries joins the Hoops for the first time

The 20-year-old joined on loan from West Brom this week and can’t wait to get started today:

“I'm actually buzzing” he told us.  As soon as I, as soon as I heard about the opportunity to come here, I was all over it. I was calling my agent, getting the loan manager at West Brom to hopefully get it over nice and quick, so it only happened in a couple of days  and now I'm here.

“ I've had some good talks with the gaffer already and joined in training so now I'm ready to go”

“I’ve been at West Brom since the age of 9, so 11 years now, and this is definitely a fresh start and something that I've probably needed to experience for a while. Speaking to the Gaffer I know just how  competitive and physical the National League North is, especially going up to clubs in Manchester, and the North East  and places like that.

As a defender, as a left back, I pride myself on defending and defending the box in particular, so I'm ready for the physical side of it, but that's something that I need to learn and I'm hoping Oxford can help me do that. it's going to be physical, but that's what I'm here for.

“ I know we've got Fylde and then I think Hereford away and then South Shields who are top of the league, at home again. That’s exciting. Nobody’s hiding from the fact that under 21s isn't necessarily the real game, with so much at stake but that's why I'm here, I'm ready for it and yeah hopefully we'll bring some good performances and some good results with it. Under 21s  is a bit more about performances and. bettering yourself  every game, but at this level and speaking to mates that have gone out on loan at step 3, step 2, and even some at National League, results is the aim of the game.

"Without that, you know fans aren't going to be too happy and the Gaffer's not going to be too happy! So ultimately it falls upon us as players that we need to put in the performances to get the 3 points every time.

“I've played more as a left side centre back recently at the Albion, but I've played as a left back my whole life so I know how to get forward and I know when to get forward. So expect some crosses into the box, and hopefully some assists, come along with that.

“It's all been friendly. I know a couple of the lads, which helps. I know Aaron Harper Bailey, I was with him at West Brom and O'Shea Ellis from Blues. So yeah, I'm speaking to the lads, they've all greeted me really well, Just the simple stuff like getting my kit and stuff like that, so yeah, it's been really good and now we need to turn the good work this week in training into a win on Saturday…”

City Women Beaten By Wycombe

A fantastic team effort from Oxford City Women saw them recover from  a poor start to push unbeaten league leaders  Wycombe Wanderers all the way at the MGroup Stadium in their last game.

City were left with a mountain to climb after just 15 minutes with Jess Watkins and Kayla Potter putting the visitors 2-0 up and seemingly  in control but the home side showed tremendous character to claw their way back into the game with an Ellie White goal making it 2-1  and underlining the fact that they had given the Chairgirls one of their sternest tests of the season.

The opener cane from the spot as Watkins slotted comfortably past Hannah Gerrow after the keeper had sprawled into a late challenge after eight minutes that meant a clear penalty. Potter then doubled the lead after a defensive error left her with the simple task of tucking the ball beyond Gerrow to make it 2-0.

Two down against an unbeaten side with seven wins and a draw from their eight matches, City might have folded but instead got their heads up and battled their way back into the game. Lucy White saw an effort pushed round the post and captain Billie Bough-French missed her kick after a clever corner routine.

Ellie White drifted an early effort over the top as City continued to press after the break and the Hoops eventually got the goal they deserved when the striker was felled on the edge of the box to give them a penalty. Although her initial spot kick was saved she retained her composure and tucked the rebound home to make it 2-1 make her own tally 13 goals from 14 games this season.

She might even have levelled soon after when put through on goal, but her attempt to lob the keeper was too gentle and Wanderers rode their luck to stay ahead.

In truth the visitors created enough chances to have made the game safe but City were still in it throughout a very entertaining 90 minutes. With an average age of 22 this side continues to learn and grow stronger and it' s not often you lose at home and leave the field to a a standing ovation.

OFF THE BALL

CHRIS WILLIAMS

Ten minutes into the last home game my phone rang. I wouldn’t usually answer  during a game: I do concentrate for 90 minutes despite what my match reports might suggest. But my wife knows that and so it was unusual to see her name on the screen. “You OK?” I asked, picking up, “No” said The Current Mrs Williams “My Dad’s not breathing and the ambulance is coming to take us us to the JR”.

Well Readers, what was I to do? I knew I wasn’t going to be much use at the hospital, and in front of me was one of the games of the season. I explained my dilemma to my colleague Gareth, sitting next to me and staring at me in disbelief. “Just go, you idiot. Some things are more important than football.” This was news to me. I looked at Apprentice Wills Hatton “Just GO” he said, although to be fair he says that to me a lot.

And so I beat the Ambulance to the Hospital. My Father In Law is still in there, thanks for asking, but he’s stable and doing OK and I’d like to thank the staff here at Oxford City for being unbelievable. I’ve been useless, but they expect that of me, and as usual everyone has been extremely kind and positive which is just what I need right now.

But maybe I am finally learning about life’s priorities.

A few years ago I was admitted to the Churchill Hospital with Kidney Stones. In extreme pain and high as a kite on morphine, the greatest pain came when the doctor tpld me on the Saturday morning that nothing had passed and I’d need to stay in for a couple more days at least. What? It was a Saturday. Matchday. No way.

Remember, I was off my head on pain killers so don’t judge me. I called my Dad. “They’re keeping me in” I wailed “Be at the Fire Exit on the renal ward at 1.30. Bring me some clothes….”

At the appointed time I saw my dad arrive and I quietly slipped out of bed and padded to the fire exit. When nobody was around I slipped out, bed gown flapping, bum bared to the world, and legged it into the car. I got changed as we went along, which was quite the surprise for the people waiting at the lights near Wood Farm. Then I went into the Kassam Stadium, performed my match duties and then got back in the car.

I’d forgotten that you can’t get out of the car park for 45 minutes, by which time the morphine had worn off and I was doubled up in pain. By the time I returned to the hospital and got back into bed I was in trouble; medicinal as well as with the furious staff. But I’d made my point and not missed the game.

I felt proud of myself but looking back now, what was I thinking? Football is my life, has been for a long time, but just occasionally the real world has to be more important.

Apparently.
