THE GAFFER
Ross Jenkins
Merry Christmas everyone. I hope you had a fantastic day with your loved ones yesterday and we'll do all we can to keep you in good spirits with a winning performance this afternoon.
It's not going to be easy against a very good Merthyr team who have adapted really well to this level. They are pushing for a second successive promotion and we are going to have to play well, but we are in good shape ourselves after two very good displays against Darlington and Spennymoor.
The Darlington game here was excellent and we finally got our reward after playing pretty well for a while without getting our rewards. This time we took our chances and were clinical at both ends of the pitch. DJ Campton-Sturridge in particular led the way with a hat-trick but there were some outstanding individual performances all over the pitch.
We then picked up a very solid point up at Spennymoor with DJ again on the scoresheet. To come away disappointed not to win is actually a really good sign! I think it once again underlined what we have been saying, that we are a match for any side in this division, now we have to change the rest of that sentence from 'on our day' to 'every day': if we can add consistency then the second half of the season will be a very different story.
The big thing we can always rely on is your support and on behalf of the staff and players we would like to thank you for that, especially those of you who went so far on the weekend before Christmas to get behind us. I hope, like all of us, you are refreshed, have recharged your batteries and are raring to go this afternoon.

A Bluffer's Guide To
The Martyrs
When was the club formed?
Not for the first time this season, that’s a good question. The current Merthyr Town replaced Merthyr Tydfil AFC, a club with a long and distinguished history in non-league football, formed in 1945 following a series of public meetings in the town.
The original club was elected to the Southern League in the summer of 1946 and enjoyed a spell of success that is unlikely ever to be bettered in non-league football as over the next eight seasons they went on to capture 5 Southern League Championships, 2 Southern League Cups, 2 Welsh Cups, 3 South Wales Cups, 3 Welsh League Championships and 3 Welsh League Cups.
Sounds promising. Was that as good as it got?
Well, the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s were turbulent times in the club’s history, and in the first half of the 1980’s there were dark days at Penydarren Park as the team drifted along in the Southern League Midland Division. However, the appointment of Lyn Jones as manager in 1985 would prove to be the catalyst for another golden era in the history of Merthyr Tydfil.
Memorable games?
In 1986 the Martyrs won the Welsh Cup to compete in the European Cup Winners Cup. The draw paired the Martyrs with Italian side Atlalanta. On 20th September 1987 Merthyr shocked the football world when goals by Kevin Rogers and Ceri Williams saw the Italians humbled at Penydarren Park by two goals to one. The adventure sadly ended a fortnight later with a narrow 2-0 defeat in Italy
Then what happened?
More turbulence. The turn of the century saw the club unable to repeat past glories and by 2004 supporters were naturally frustrated with events, that summer the decision was taken to set up a supporters’ trust - Martyrs to the Cause’. As well as trying to support the club financially the Trust decided to foster young football talent in the Borough by setting up a Merthyr Tydfil A.F.C. youth team.
The 2008/9 season was probably the most difficult in the club’s chequered history and there was a real danger that the Martyrs would fail to complete the campaign. However, a massive effort by Merthyr supporters ensured that this would not be the case. This backs-to-the-wall spirit was replicated by the players who, despite going without wages for weeks at a time, ended the season in eighth place. In June 2009 the club went into Administration and the Supporters’ Trust received the go ahead to operate the club under license. It was becoming increasingly obvious to everyone connected with the club that Merthyr Tydfil A.F.C. was doomed. Consequently, the Trust Board took the decision to carry on as a reformed club.
Didn’t they ‘freeze’ for a while?
Yes. In September 2020, The Martyrs took the decision to ‘Mothball’ for the season after consulting with the governing bodies & the Southern League. This meant that the squad was disbanded, and Gavin Willliams left his managerial role after just under 5 years in charge. Upon resumption a completely new squad started in Southern League Premier Division.
Last season saw the Martyrs crowned as Southern League Premier South champions, after an incredible season which included a 32-game unbeaten run in the league.
ON THE ROAD
Chris Williams follows City to Loftus Road
I love the FA Youth Cup and this year's adventure gave the Under 18s a chance to play on a national stage when they travelled to Loftus Road to take on QPR. I tried to introduce a rule that you could only go if you went to support the team at Portland in a previous round but manager Eddie Odhiambo pointed out that I didn’t go and would therefore be banned, something I had previously overlooked.
Loftus Road is a funny sort of ground. It has been modernised and updated, and each of the blue clad sides matches in shape and size, but it’s like watching a toddler in a suit at a wedding: neat if a bit forced. The real change is not to the ground but the surrounding areas where high rise tower blocks beam down their twinkling Christmas lights on to neon lit bars and restaurants. BBC Television Centre is now high-cost apartments and expensive looking watering holes: the Broadcaster on Wood Lane is a new arrival since my last visit. Where once you paid a snotty nosed urchin to mind your car on the nearby industrial estate you now pay through the nose at the Westfield shopping centre.
I’ve done that today and, after leaving home early to avoid non-existent traffic issues, I have an hour to kill with a spot of light Christmas shopping. Much of this time is spent being doused by people offering free samples of aftershave: there are a LOT of fragrance shops at Westfield and I am thoroughly misted before I finally give up and head for the ground.
Now blocked in by tower blocks the stadium is harder to find than I remember. I pass the Queen’s Tavern which I presume to be boarded up but is in fact just a bit rough. The R’s Superstore is actually closed but inside reception I run into an old friend, Paul Morrissey, QPR’s Head of Media, who welcomes me with a hug and “you smell nice” then shows me through to pitchside where the City kids are just arriving.
They take photos and survey their surroundings, relaxed and far from overawed. They have worked hard to get this far and it’s not just a case of enjoying their big day out. The winners tonight play Spurs at home in the next round so there’s a real incentive to make further progress and you can sense a quiet determination about this group as they head for the changing room: always my favourite bit of the ground because there has been a temporary wooden step into that room for at least a decade.
I step over that and head for the Press Box, offering me a bird’s eye view of the action. In front of me a small army of scouts gather to cast their eye over potential stars of the future. To my right the friends and families settle into their seats ready to support their teams. City possibly outnumber the home support and the aura of paternal pride is great to see.
The game kicks off and it’s a million miles an hour. Rangers are big, strong, and talented but City match them and scrap for everything. When the home side take the lead City could throw in the towel but instead they raise their game and go after their higher-league hosts. Two minutes before the break Kauan spins and is wiped out and City deservedly have a penalty. The Brazilian striker steps up and slots home and shows signs of learning his trade because he KNOWS where the camera is as he knee slides towards it before being buried by his jubilant teammates.
It’s a great moment, one to cherish, but also a dangerous time to score because it gives the QPR Coach a tangible reason to warn his side of the perils of playing lower league opposition. Sure enough, his side are a different proposition after the break and, sadly, City struggle to deal with the renewed intensity. Eddie makes changes, searching for energy but his youngsters have run themselves into the ground and eventually the home side are comfortable 5-1 winners.
That’s a harsh scoreline and City rightly take the applause from both sets of fans. Nothing to be ashamed of, they have given it their all and shared an incredible adventure. Now, two weeks later, they all have the same question: can they kick on and grace these stages more than once? Readers, I once played at Loftus Road, for Middlesex Poly. Forty years on it’s a fantastic football memory. Boys, unlike me, you can all play the game. Make sure this night, for you, is merely one of many games you look back on and smile…
Spare a thought for the players today. While you were tucking into the Quality Street and having a second helping of trifle they were trying to be careful!
The days of players overdoing it on December 25th are long gone and as City defender Jacob Roddy told us, Christmas is a fantastic time for family but maybe not for feasting…
“No, we have the game on Boxing Day so you have to prepare the right way. But the main thing about Christmas Day is spending time with your family and being able to see them, isn’t it? It’s not like you were as a kid, nowadays it’s more about seeing everyone on Christmas Day have Christmas dinner together, all of that, but also in the back of my our minds you are always aware that we have a game the next day. So I doubt any of us will be going over the top.
“Most of us have had that for a long time: for me the last Christmas before I started playing was probably when I was about 15 or 16 and we used to get a little break at Christmas time,
“Most of the players are probably the same and if you have grown up in football then you know that around Christmas time is a really important time of the year with a lot of games in a short amount of time. Also people look forward to playing on Boxing Day. There’s often a big crowd and lots of friends and family come along to games so you can't beat it, Christmas football! And yeah, we'll hopefully get 3 points to top it all off.
As Jacob says, it’s a big game for City today and after a convincing win in the last home game against Darlington it’s important to keep that momentum going this afternoon.
“Yes, the performance in the last couple of games is something that we want to build on” he says. "That performance, and the one at Spennymoor are something we really need to replicate, on Boxing Day and then over the weeks coming. We want to climb the table, we don't want to be down where we are at the moment, and I think that that's the feeling amongst the group; we want to start making our way back up the league, and obviously that means putting a string of performances together so we're going to try to do that”.
And the former Charlton youngster is looking to play a key role in that, especially after being in such good form in recent weeks, whether at left or right wing back…
"Whatever is needed for the team, I don’t mind which side I play. I’m comfortable as a full back either side. I was a winger when I was really young but I think my winger days are long gone now! Although if Ross reads this and wants to play me as a me winger, I'll give it a good go. But it’s been great to get a chance and play on both sides of defence this year and show what I can do. I just want to play a part and help the team turn in persistent winning performances."
City Women's Succesful Half Season
Oxford City Women will restart the season with a home game against Wycombe Wanderers on January 11th
City have had a memorable first half of the campaign with record crowds to support them on a record-breaking FA Cup run and a new-look team showing huge promise with so many youngsters coming through the system.
“The FA Cup run was something we’ll all remember” Manager Lyon Theoharous told us. “We just seemed to gather momentum with each round. We left it late to win in front of 500 people, then there were almost 700 for the next game and then finally we set the new record at around 750 against Swindon. Unfortunately we came up against a good side in good form- they are still unbeaten all season and as hard as we fought we just couldn’t quite match them: I guess it’s a nice consolation to hear their fans say we pushed them as hard as any team all season.
“The draw for the next round was held here on the Monday night and that was great exposure for the club so we feel like we have raised the profile this season and that is always part of the aim.
“We have also given young players a chance and they have responded really well. The Velocity programme is such good grounding and then you look at Yasmin Edwards coming through that and challenging Ellie White to end as top scorer this season. That’s incredible to see and it’s going to be quite a contest for that Golden Boot!
“We’ve maybe not been as consistent as we’d have liked in the league so far but the league table doesn’t tell the full story: we are in seventh place but have only lost twice all season! It’s just a case of turning one or two draws into wins in the new year and seeing how far up the table we can finish”.
It’s Lyon’s first season in charge of the team and he’s thoroughly enjoying the challenge so far:
“Absolutely” he says. “I’ve loved every minute of it, right from that first day in pre-season. The players work hard for each other and off the field I want to thank everyone who makes this such a great club to work at. That includes all the staff but also the volunteers and the fans. It feels like we have built something together in 2025 and now our job is to keep that going and keep building in a successful 2026.”

OFF THE BALL
CHRIS WILLIAMS
Boxing Day football is great. Last season City were away and I took the opportunity to spend Boxing Day at home with my family: the first time I have done that since 2001.Remember that my daughters are in their 20s and you can possibly see that I have had my priorities wrong for quarter of a century; a first Christmas with my new Grandson was the thing that tipped the balance last year, or I’d have been at Rushall!
I’d like you to spare a thought today for a hardy group of people who make this club so great. I won’t name names but there are people behind the scenes today who have been here since early o’clock to make your Boxing Day extra special. A 1pm kick off means a pre-match meeting two hours earlier, so most of them have given up an entire day at home with their loved ones. And if you are working on Boxing Day it is always in the back of your mind throughout Christmas Day: don't overdo it, got to work tomorrow…
So I thought I would bring you a festive football tale to help illustrate what staff have to do to ensure your matchday is smooth as Velvet Disarrona. As many of you know, I used to work on the yellows side of the city and one Boxing Day we were due to play Rushden and Diamonds at home. It was a cold , cold Christmas (one for the Dana fans out there) and around 10pm on Christmas Day I got a call from the chairman. Can you come and help early tomorrow: the pitch is frozen.
So there I was at 8am on a Boxing Day, shovelling snow and trying to get the game on. There were loads of us: the guys at the car wash were there spraying on warm water (I still think that hindered rather than helped), Manager Chris Wilder and I rolled giant snowballs and there was a wonderful sense of teamwork. Merry Chrisses. My dad, having travelled 4 hours from Norfolk, turned up at the same time at the match officials. I gave him a hug and handed him a shovel, just as the ref called it off.
But my story does not end with that crushing blow because things carried on for weeks. By the time of the rearrangement we had sold our best player, Luke Foster, and replaced him with the excellent Jake Wright. “I want Foster’s face off the programme” the Chairman said, looking at the festive montage I had photoshopped. “. “What do you recommend?” I asked “Potato printing?”
Eventually we compromised. We produced stickers and carefully stuck them over Luke’s face. 2,000 of the damned things. Me and the youth team opening boxes, taking each programme out, sticking the sticker, putting them back, sealing the boxes…. for TWO DAYS.
Why did we do that? Because, folks, that’s the sort of thing that goes on that fans never see. Similar things will have happened today, but all the supporters need to see is the gliding swan, not the furious paddling legs beneath. But I see it and I appreciate everything they do, always with a smile and good intentions (not you Gatey, you’re Oxford City’s Grinch even if you did win 'Employee of the Year')
Enjoy the game, enjoy the day, share the win with us then go home and hug your family. Merry Christmas.
