THE GAFFER

Ross Jenkins

Evening everyone and welcome to our first game under the lights this season here at the MGroup Stadium. I’d like to thank MGroup for sponsoring tonight’s game and for their continued backing and support. It’s a good partnership and I hope to be able to enjoy a celebratory drink with them if we can get back to winning ways tonight.

As you know, I’m not one to make excuses after a defeat. We started very strongly against Radcliffe on Saturday, scored a good goal through George Burroughs but then for some reason we sat back and let the away team dictate things too much. They scored right on half time which gave them a little bit of momentum after the break but the game really hinged on one moment where Byron Wilson threw himself to block a shot and the referee saw it as hitting his arm, rather than his shoulder.

Most of you saw it live and will have your view on it so I’m not going to say too much about that decision, but that split second led to a red card, a penalty, a goal and then us being a man light for the rest of the game. After Alfie’s red card in the previous game we battled really hard for an hour but on Saturday Radcliffe used that extra man very well and were ruthless.

I genuinely don’t think the league table reflects our performances this season but we now need to show a reaction. Alfie is suspended and we are still without Jack Bearne who will be out for a few more weeks as a consequence of a challenge that WAS a red card but we have brought in Aaron Lacey from Oxford United, a young defender who is very well regarded over at the Kassam and who will strengthen us at an important time.

We’d like to add a couple more new faces and are working on that but the players who are already here deserve massive credit for their attitude and hard work so far. We haven’t had much luck, results have gone against us, sometimes for reasons beyond our control, but I know we have the talent and character to turn that around at this early stage in the season.

You can help with that. It won’t be a massive crowd tonight but we need everyone to stay positive, get behind us, and let’s all play a part in getting three points on the board.

Enjoy the game,

 ROSS

MEET THE TEAMS

O
Oxford City FC are delighted to welcome The MGroup as our match sponsors this evening when we welcome Alfreton Town to the MGroup Stadium.

The MGroup, one of Oxfordshire’s leading accountancy firms, are the club’s primary sponsors  and will bring guests along to enjoy hospitality in the brand new Velocity Suite tonight.

The MGroup have extensive expertise in accountancy services, including Auditing, Statutory Reporting, Tax Planning & Advice, Bookkeeping, Management Reporting & Forecasting, and Business Reviews, alongside a dedicated Corporate Finance team.

“It’s been great getting to know everyone at The MGroup since they became Stadium Sponsors at the end of last year” Chris Williams, Head of Partnerships at Oxford City said. “They are here supporting the team every week but also supporting all of the fantastic work the club is doing in the local community and it’s a partnership we hope will continue to grow and expand.”

Peter Smith and Oliver Squire, Partners at The MGroup, added

“It’s inspiring to see the way the football club works with local businesses and across the whole community in Oxford. We are proud to be working alongside them and we look forward to bringing our own team along on Tuesday night to lend our support to the players for what we’re sure will be a great night of football under the lights.”

It wouldn’t be too much of a stretch to suggest Tom Scott has been our best player this season. He has a goal, the first of our campaign, and three assists and has been influential in creating chances and putting The Hoops on the front foot in games.

When this is compared to the four goals and two assists of his previous season, it’s a marked improvement. But what does he put this down to?

“Bravery” he said. “A bit more bravery and a bit more risk tasking in my passing. I’m looking to play forward and create more.

“I sat down over the summer with a few different people to look at where I can improve. I really wanted to get my numbers up, because they weren’t good enough last year. That was the main area for me really.

“Analising the games is something that just comes naturally. I always watch the games back and my Dad watches every game as well so he can add his bit. I just try to improve wherever I can and that was a big area for me".

One of the things that is mentioned when people talk about Oxford City is the environment, the atmosphere in the changing room, the “vibes” as Tom puts it. “We’ve got a good squad” he said.

“There’s a lot of new faces, a lot of changes within the squad, which brings in new personalities and different cliques if you like.

“Nothing has really changed though. We have all gelled really well, we are close as a team and it’s a good environment for the guys that have been here a while and it’s a great environment for the new boys as well.

It is the second season Scott has spent in the National League North. The endless bus journeys up the country continue and filling your time on the journeys is no mean feat. If you ever get on the travelling bus with the players, you will find Scott next to Latrell Humphrey-Ewers.

“There’s only so much you can talk to each other though,” Scott jokes. “Look, he’s already switched off” Scott says pointing at Latrell.

“One thing you should know about Latrell is that he can scroll on TikTok for days. But you find ways of entertaining yourselves.”

I should point out that this interview started with Tom Scott trying to convince Latrell that Chemtrails are making people ill. “See them things, they’re chemtrails” Scott said.

“They get spayed in the air and make everyone il.l Latrell doesn’t believe me, in fact no one does. They think I’m a conspiracy theorist.”

“For what it’s worth. I was talking to Jordan [Piper] about the pyramids earlier and he just walked away. But I’m not sure about them.”

It seems as though they have the entertainment fairly well covered…

The Hoops Foundation

It was like one of those Magic Eye pictures from 2005. I was standing in the new Velocity Hospitality suite chatting to a lively group of Men In Smart Casual. All in their mid to late 40s, this was a reunion and I slowly recognised that these must have been a football team at some stage. Then I noticed that one was Mark Druce. Ah, he’s next to Paul Evans, son of Maurice. Oh, and that’s Jon Muttock…

This was the Oxford United youth team of the late 80s. The Lost Generation. These were the best local young footballers in the area and they were at the Manor Ground during the club’s greatest ever era. How exciting. But at the same time their path to the first team was made far more difficult, as Jon told me as we chatted.

“It was an unbelievable experience but to get into that Oxford United team I had to get ahead of Andy Melville, Tommy Caton and Ceri Evans who were all international players. All three were brilliant with me, really top men, and don’t forget you had people like Micky Lewis around as well, so it was brilliant but it was frustrating in equal measures.

“We’re here today (against Radcliffe) as an Oxford United reunion but I love coming back here because it’s a great club and what they have done is amazing plus they make everyone so welcome here whether you played for the club or not.

“I did two years as an apprentice at United then got a pro deal and that became a second year so I was playing in what’s now the Championship at 17. Brian Horton was the Manager who gave me that chance. I made my debut against Wolves who had Steve Bull up front who played for England!

"I was sub two more times and then the season ended and I moved on and I came to City. I do look back and think I could have done more as a young pro but things happen for a reason and I moved on and ended up with the opportunity of playing at Wembley with City.

“Playing for United was great but the best day of my footballing career was playing for City at Wembley.

“ I came here and played regularly and we got on an amazing run that ended up with the FA Vase Final at Wembley in 1995. I think any young player would have dreamed of playing there. It’s amazing to have played there and I still tell everyone I meet about it! But when you’re playing you  don’t realise how lucky you are.

“We were lucky in some of the earlier rounds but we deserved our chance. I can say I played there but losing the game maybe took five or ten percent off the memories. We had the England changing room,  we had the whole experience so it was a great day for the whole club and maybe that’s why I still have such a connection here.

“Looking at how it is progressing here, with the new building  and all the other things the club is doing it’s really impressive and I look forward to coming back many times and seeing that growth continue to happen.”

CITY WOMEN
KICK OFF WITH A WIN

Oxford City Women started their league season with thoroughly entertaining 3-2 win over Sholing at the MGroup Stadium on Sunday.

Goals from Yasmin Edwards and Ellie Walecki and a decisive late penalty from Ellie White saw City pick up all three points in a high-paced game full of incident and drama.

City created the early chances with the lively Edwards and non-stop Emily Harris forcing two good saves and White also going close before Sholing scored the opener against the run of play when a long ball from the back after ten minutes bypassed everyone and allowed Sophie Lee to tackle City keeper Kiera Maskell and roll the ball home from the tightest of angles for her first of the afternoon..

City continued to pepper the Sholing goal but found visiting keeper Grace Jenman in top form with good saves from White and Harris again plus a back-pedalling catch when the hard-working Grace Craven tied to chip her after 25 minutes.

In the end it took another tackle on the keeper to produce the equaliser after 31 minutes. Edwards’ pace was troubling the Sholing back line and when she chased a back pass down Jenman was always going to come off second best as she raced from here goal. Edwards won the challenge, beat a desperate challenge from a recovering defender and casually knocked the ball home to deservedly put City back on level terms.

However all that hard work and domination was almost undone two minutes into the second half when the dangerous Lee again stole the ball inside the area and curled it inside the far post for her second of the game to put the visitors 2-1 up.

Undeterred, City continued to play their way back into things and on 55 were level again when Walecki made immediate impact found space inside the box to fire just inside the left-hand post and make it 2-2.

An injury to the ref meant a change of officials soon after and with ten minutes left the replacement ref saw a tug on Walecki as she rolled past a defender, and from the penalty White powered home an unstoppable spot kick to seal an opening day win.

There was still time for a vital flying save from Kiera Maskell in the 93rd minute but City were full value for their victory.

Great entertainment, five goals and a flying start. What's not to like?
