Welcome back as we take on Leamington in another important league game. I'd like to offer a warm welcome to everyone from Leamington this afternoon. In this league where we are covering so many miles it's almost a local derby!
It's important that we get a positive result today after two incredibly frustrating games, at home to Southport and then away at Bedford on Tuesday night.
The Southport game was the first time this season where I've really had to spell things out to the players at half time. We were poor in the first half and for once lacked our usual energy. Did we deserve to be a goal down at the break? Probably not but we hadn't created chances and we demanded much much more after the break. Then we got caught by a sucker punch and conceded a second straight after half time. We started playing after that and got back to 2-1 but this is a tough league and you have to start every game in the right fashion.
We did that at Bedford and dominated so much of the game. The stats show that we had over 70% of possession and more shots on target than the home side, but once again we came away with nothing despite a much better performance. There were positives, plenty of them even in defeat but now it is up to us to take those good things and turn them into three points. We are starting to get one or two players back from injury and if we can keep players fit and get into a rhythm then things can change pretty quickly, starting today.
Finally, a good luck message to our Women's team ahead of their big FA Cup game here tomorrow. It should be quite a game so it's up to us to set the tone with a win this afternoon.

Oxford City are delighted to welcome Burnout BBQ as Match Sponsors for Oxtoberfest this afternoon.
Oxtoberfest sees a mini beer festival and live music from an Oompah band, as well as unlimited drinks wristbands being available today.
Burnout BBQ have been a huge hit with their matchday offerings and for this game are tailoring the menu to mirror the Oxtoberfest theme.
Fans are able to choose from delicious Original Bratwurst, Jalapeno and Cheese and Smoked Beef Sausages served with a choice of Brisket, Pulled Pork or Cheese and all served with Burnout BBQ’s outstanding sauces and sides.
Malcolm Moore of Burnout BBQ told us
“We’ve loved being part of matchday here at Oxford City this season but it’s a much wider partnership than that- we are here for City Women games and for Oxford United Women matches but the site is used from 10am to 10pm most days and we’re often here feeding parents while their children train.
“It’s working really well and people love the food so we’re delighted to be match sponsors on what will be a really busy day that we hope will be lot of fun.”
Chris Williams, City’s Head of Partnerships added
“ Burnout BBQ has quickly become a huge part of matchdays and we thank them for agreeing to be Match Sponsors for our Oxtoberfest game. Football, live music, beer and sausages? What’s not to like and we hope as many fans as possible come along to join us for one on the highlights of the season.”
A Bluffer’s Guide to Leamington
Tell us about Leamington, the town
Well, obviously it is a Spa. In 1814, the Royal Pump Rooms and Baths were opened in the town. This offered cures by bathing in pools of salty spa water and with the spread of the town's popularity, and the granting of a 'Royal' prefix in 1838 by Queen Victoria, 'Leamington Priors' was renamed 'Royal Leamington Spa'. Around 56,000 people live there and in recent years it has been dubbed Silicon Spa because so many video game companies have moved to the town.
How old is the football club?
Depends on the name. The club was originally founded in 1933 as Leamington Borg & Beck but known as Lockheed Borg & Beck, as they became associated with a local works. The team soon became Lockheed Leamington, and then AP Leamington in 1973, as the works team for Automotive Products. In 1985 the club returned to their original name, but within three years the ground had been sold and the club went into hiatus until re-emerging in 2000 at the New Windmill Ground in Harbury Lane, Whitnash, (a small town adjoining Leamington to the south), and winning two successive promotions.
Any famous former Brakes
Famous ex-players include former Coventry City captain Charlie Timmins (1958–1961), George Green, who won the 1925 FA Cup Final with Sheffield United and former King of the Jungle Harry Redknapp Josh Blake played more than 400 games and scored 187 times for the club. The versatile player was synonymous with the Brakes’ rise up through the non-league pyramid, and showed a loyalty to his hometown club that is rare, even at this level of the game. Alex Rodman played in the EFL after starting at Leamington in the Midland Football Alliance in the summer of 2005.
What’s with the badge?
The Leamington badge shows a windmill and a football. The windmill image has been associated with the club for a long time, since both the old Windmill Ground and the current New Windmill Ground were near iconic windmills.
Tell us something to impress our mates down the pub.
Leamington is closely associated with the founding of lawn tennis. The first tennis club in the world was formed in 1872 by Major Henry Gem and Augurio Pereira and the modern rules of lawn tennis were drawn up in 1874 in Leamington Tennis Club.
Anyone famous from Leamington?
England keeper Ben Foster, sinister occultist Aleister Crowley and boxer Randolph Turner were all born there while Managers Roberto Di Matteo and Chris Coleman have both lived there, along with semi-funny comedian Russell Howard.
Oxford City FC would like to thank Comms4U for their continued support of the club and welcome them formally as Official Partners.
Comms4U are an Oxfordshire based company with national coverage for network cabling solutions.
Combining the latest cabling technology with the best manufacturers, Comms4U offer everything from a simple data socket to a full convergent technology system and offer free site surveys to evaluate the needs of their customers whether that’s LAN, WiFi, CCTV, Door entry systems or Audio Visual Installations.
Chris Williams, Head of Partnerships at the MGroup Stadium welcomed Comms4U, saying
“This is another significant partnership for the football club and it’s great to have Comms4U be working alongside us. Over the summer we installed the new Velocity Suite of classrooms and hospitality areas and Comms4U made a complex cabling and wifi situation go smoothly and with minimal disruption. They have since worked with us to upgrade the media facilities and gantry and everything is done with clear communication and absolute professionalism.
“We look forward to growing the partnership."
Adrian Dix, Sales Manager of Comms4U told us:
“Working on the new building this summer allowed us to see first hand just how many people use this site, whether it’s businesses, hospitality, students or footballers of all ages. It’s a club with plenty of character and amazing links to its local community and great connections are what we are all about.
“There is a thriving business community around the club and we are proud to be joining and helping the club grow and expand.”
Comms4U sponsor defender Darnell Johnson. Look out for their new branding of the scoreboard today and if you need help with network cabling or just want to find out a little more about them then visit www.comms4u.co.uk
One of the hardest things to do in football is come out and represent the club in interviews after a defeat. And yet after both losses this week we have turned to captain Josh Ashby to sum up the dressing room. To make it even harder last Saturday’s Man of the Match had to come straight into the bar and talk to everyone about the game as he deservedly collected his award
“That is quite hard to do and I’m not going to lie, I was trying to avoid eye contact when you were waiting to tell me I had to come and do all that last Saturday” he told Chris Williams, “but it is part of the game and as captain that’s one of the responsibilities. The fans deserve to know what’s been said and how we feel so I’ll always be upfront and honest if I’m asked to sum up the game.
“The dressing room was a very quiet place last Saturday, as it is any time you lose. But you have to pick yourself up and then help those around you too. We are in this together and we are a close group so we know what we have to do and we know things will turn for us.
“What have we got left, 32 games? So that’s close to 100 points still to be played for; plenty of time to start picking up the points we know we should be getting with the players we have in this squad.
“We talked on Saturday about learning from that game and I do think we showed that at Bedford on Tuesday. We got into good areas but didn’t work the keeper enough, so again that’s something to learn from and improve on. It was very frustrating. We played much better than Saturday and on another day we would get something out of that game. We just needed that little bit of quality in the big moments.
“The league table doesn’t look great, we know that, but nobody is feeling sorry for themselves. What’s the point in that? You have to stay positive and we came in to train this week determined to work hard and to take that into Saturday’s game. There have been very fine margins in games recently: most of them have been decided by just one goal and we have created chances all season: there aren’t many we haven’t scored in.
“Over the last few weeks I’ve had a couple of free kicks hit the bar and it’s a different game if they drop just under the bar and go in.
"So we’re not far off and hopefully on Saturday we give the fans something to smile about because they have been outstanding for us all season, home and away".
There is just no pleasing some people.
When we played Curzon Ashton I left home and carefully locked the door behind me. Ten minutes later I got a call from my wife. “Thanks for nothing” she said. “You locked me inside the house and I had to climb out through a window in my work clothes"
“Why do you have a window in your work clothes?” I asked, not really helping myself but enjoying the moment. Readers, I will not give the current Mrs Williams the satisfaction of printing her reply as it was language she should not be proud of.
Last Saturday I was more careful. I checked throughout the house and confidently locked the door, 100% sure she was not within. Well. How was I to know she hadn’t taken a key and that I had locked her out? How is that my fault? And yet, inevitably, it was. She spent the afternoon at her dad’s house and shall we just say that the atmosphere was a touch frosty when I finally got home? Lock her in, lock her out? Neither seems to keep her happy.
To be brutally honest, I’ve done worse. One day I was going up to London to report on an FA Trophy Final at Wembley - Mansfield v Darlington. I was to interview fans, get on the pitch at the final whistle to capture the scenes and then Mansfield would use that footage for their Wembley Triumph DVD. Oh how we laughed when they lost and my entire day was for nothing.
But it was still better than Mrs Williams’s afternoon. She gave me a lift to Haddenham Station, well, I drove, she was going to drive back. Except, in my haste, as I sprinted across the bridge and just got onboard as the doors closed, I had forgotten to hand the car keys over. Again, I question whether her forgetting her mobile phone WAS my fault, but I found her car keys as we passed Beaconsfield Station. Not my finest hour.
Somehow, despite such minor tribulations we are still married after 30 years. The secret? I think it’s because deep down she knows I mean well.
Each of those incidents happened on matchdays.I only have a tiny little brain and it gets full of football so no wonder I can’t function in real life. I am properly helpless, whether it’s home or away.
I become very distant, can't focus on anything else. I have a set routine: shave my head on a matchday, sit with an early coffee somewhere in Thame, check my day is clear, memorise my routine, start the #positivevibz, get my game face on. How am I supposed to remember trivial matters like not locking people in or out of houses?
Head shaved. Doors checked. Game Face On. #Positivevibz

The Youth Team have a big game next Tuesday when they welcome Chippenham Town to the MGroup Stadium in the FA Youth Cup.
It’s a competition that creates its own drama and makes lifelong memories for players if a team can put a run of games together
“ I played in it and really enjoyed it” young attacking midfielder Braydon Daniel told us this week. “I played a game for Thame in my first year as a scholar. Things didn't go to plan, but then I went back to City for my second year and we got to the first round. We got quite a hard draw against Reading, and lost 4-1 in that game. But it felt like the team's performance was really good.
“There’s always a decent crowd, a lot of families are here and you know scouts are watching too.
"I reckon the youth cup lads will have a good crowd on Tuesday, and hopefully the crowd will get behind them to get that extra energy boost to win the game, Chippenham is a very interesting game. We played against them at the start of the last pre season and I remember Tom Russell the goalkeeper scoring from the halfway line to win the match so hopefully it’s another memorable game next week".
Brayden will be hoping to be back in the squad again today after missing out in the last two matches.
“Hopefully I’m involved but whoever plays we’ve got to be looking for a reaction on Saturday. I feel like the performance on Tuesday was better then. Saturdays. I thought we kept possession of the ball. We just lacked the end product, so hopefully we get back to training Thursday and Friday, we work on those things and then put it right on Saturday.
“The games have been quite tight, just the odd one goal, but we can't use that as an excuse . It’s about what we do as a group, but personally I know I just have to keep working in training. I've got to keep proving myself and doing the extras and then when I get an opportunity to come on, then I've got to take the chance".
