THE GAFFER
Ross Jenkins
Welcome to the first home game of the season and I’d like to extend a warm welcome to everyone who has made the long journey with Macclesfield today. They are a club who went through some very difficult times so I’m pleased for the fans that they are thriving once again.
They will be an excellent test for us today after an opening day at Fylde last weekend that ended up being as frustrating as it was encouraging. We started the game, started the season, really well and looked very comfortable in and out of possession. Tom Scott and Zac McEachran put us 2-0 up and we were dominating key areas until we conceded a goal that opened the door for the home side.
Fair play, they used that momentum and turned the game on its head to win 3-2 but we have to learn from what happened and be much more composed when teams try to put us under pressure.
As you’d expect, I’ve watched it back a number of times and we definitely did enough to get something out of it and I was relatively pleased with a lot of the things we did. We have worked hard in pre-season and looked fit, sharp, and disciplined so lets use those positives and take them into today’s game.
One big positive from Saturday was the way the new players settled in and played. Club stalwarts Reece Fleet and Lewis Coyle have moved on and the two youngsters, Jayden Carbon and Phil Croker, have been given a wonderful opportunity to play in the EFL. That means new faces in the squad and it’s exciting for all of us to have this fresh start. I have to say that players who have been here for a while have been exceptional in welcoming the new players and making sure everyone knows our core values as a club.
That forges a togetherness that runs through all of the staff at this club and in to the stands where I am sure we will have a big crowd here today. Days like these are great for the supporters: all that optimism, a chance to see the team for the first time, a chance to meet up with friends and look forward to the season ahead. Our job is simple: make sure those smiles today get wider as the season goes on….
Enjoy the game,
ROSS

MEET THE TEAMS

Oxford City are delighted to welcome TotalQ to the club as official partners.
TotalQ provide specialised services in quality management, alongside offering temporary staff support for seamless operational execution. They also provide cost and process saving support for all industries utilising years of automotive best practice.
TotalQ will play a prominent part in today's first home game when their sponsorship of the Main Stand (The TotalQ Stand) will be unveiled for the first time. City Owner Justin Merritt said
“TotalQ will be very visible to everyone who visits the MGroup Stadium with their name all along the stand and hopefully we kick off with a first win on Saturday. Martin is a wonderful example of a local business wanting to give back to their local community and we look forward to strengthening the partnership over the course of the season and in the years to come.”
Managing Director Martin Spackman has helped the company implement strategies across multiple businesses to ensure quality standards and monetary savings for clients and believes that joining forces with The Hoops is an excellent connection for all concerned.
“I grew up in Barton and have been a massive supporter of football in Oxford all my life. Oxford City has such a strong connection with the community: I was there recently and there were hundreds of local youngsters playing football on the two pitches.
"The community aspect for me is incredibly important, with an example of this being able to provide tickets for a match for a local school in order to allow pupils to enjoy watching football as much as I do"
“I wanted to give something back to try and help that community work continue to grow and expand. There are big plans behind the scenes at the club and I’m proud to be part of that, and also meeting some familiar faces at the game Saturday”

ZAC IS BACK
“We believe we have a squad that can compete with anyone" says City talisman

Zac McEachran has come a long way with Oxford City. The Hoops’ talismanic forward was top scorer last season, as well as winning the Goal of the Season award, and is now close to 350 appearances since first signing in 2017. From talented youngster to fans favourite, Zac has been flying in pre-season, scored in the season opener at Fylde last weekend and now looks forward to a first home game of the season…
“ I enjoy playing here and I think this year we are all determined to make amends for what was a disappointing season last time around” he told us. "The club is certainly moving in the right direction and I want to be a part of that. I have been here for a lot of seasons now. One more and I get a testimonial, right?” he laughs. “I've still got a few years left in me though I hope!”
City may have been beaten 3-2 in the first game of the season at Fylde, but Zac believes the new-look Hoops should have beaten the title favourites.
“Definitely. We should have seen it through but one result doesn’t define a season. You know, if you are two up, you shouldn't concede three goals in 13 minutes, We know we can't really do that again, it has to be a one-off but every game is a learning curve, and hopefully that result galvanises the team . It's not the end of the world, just very frustrating but we are all learning about each other right now and that game is really going to help us learn quickly.
“We've got a very tough start, looking at the fixtures in the first 5 games, I think four of them are the four teams people are tipping but you know, we've got to play everyone at some point in the season and we believe we have a squad that can compete with anyone this season."
Watching from the stands, pre-season looked very demanding this sweltering summer?
“Yeah, there's been a lot of running and it’s been very hot but I feel quite fit at the moment and that core fitness will really help us all this season.”
And finally, are the players’ expectations as high as the fans this time around? The grin is back on Zac’s face when he says “I definitely think we can get play-offs.
“The team's strong and we will have learned from last season as a squad, When Ross came back last year the first 10 games had already cost us and we were always playing catch up.
“But this summer you can see that the new players have settled quickly and bought into things. They are a good bunch, and they have slotted in nicely with those of us who have been here a while so we all believe it'll be a good season”.

Together in Electric Dreams
City enter a brave new world...
Welcome back readers and welcome to a brand new season of Hoopy hopefulness.
Welcome to a new look matchday programme, our first try at digital and a brave new world for a man who has made or contributed to perhaps 5,000 printed editions over the last 25 years! It started when I became Communications Manager at Oxford United. At the end of my first day at the old Manor Ground the Club Secretary said ‘oh, and by the way, you’re the new programme editor’. I smiled, nodded, looked at the fixture list and saw a game four days away and then realised I had less than one clue how to make a programme.
I managed it: the first ever game at the Kassam Stadium against Crystal Palace saw a 16 page programme and from there I grew it until it was at one stage 84 pages and winning multiple awards. Other clubs came knocking and over the years you’ll find my trademark poor grammer and punctuation; in matchday magazines from Wrexham to Wolverhampton, Braintree to Brighton.
It was good while it lasted. But in the end, nobody was reading it. What’s the point in wasting words if nobody is listening? I can just go home and talk to my wife if I want that.
Football in its modern form is a different game if you are in the Premier League. There you can charge what you like and people will still buy a programme because you are getting a souvenir of an event. Think about it: if you to go Wembley people may moan but they still pay a tenner for a programme because one day in the future they will find it in the loft and say ‘ah, I was there’.
In the lower leagues there is an element of that. We would sell more to Macclesfield fans today than home supporters because they want to mark a first visit to the ground. But sales would still only add up to less that 10% of the crowd. 10% at Wembley means 8,000 printed programmes. 10% here means 100…
We tried to keep the printed edition going but rising print costs meant we could no longer justify production. Again, here’s an A level Maths example question. A programme costs £1.50 to print and you sell it for £3. If you print 100 how many do you need to sell to break even? And that doesn’t factor in the hours spent making it, or the sellers…
So we have decided to go Digital. I’ve enjoyed learning how to do so and it will get smoother and better as we go along. THIS is the equivalent of the Crystal Palace programme quarter of a century ago.
I’d like to thank the National League for letting us try this unconventional way of doing a programme (Yes, I did check!) and I’d like to thank everyone who provided feedback after a trial edition against Maidenhead. 184 people read that: more people than were at the game.
When I produced my first programme it was proof read by a gentleman called Ambrose Landon. I sent him this modern version for feedback. He rightly pointed out that 2001 to 2025 is NOT 25 years and I rolled back the years by ignoring him completely. “It’ll be good once you get the hang of it” he said. “you almost got the hang of printed ones in the end. Just took a while...”
