THE GAFFER

Ross Jenkins

Welcome back as we take a break from league action to try and make progress in the FA Trophy.

It's a great competition and we thoroughly enjoyed the adventure last season where we went on a good run and got as far as the club has ever been in the Trophy. We hopefully created a few memories for the fans and the aim has to be to try and go as far as we can again this year.

Obviously the league has to be our priority and two wins in two games have changed the picture a little for us. There were so many positives from the wins over Hereford and Worksop, not least because we adapted and faced two very different challenges head on.

In the Hereford game we had to try and find a way to break down ten men who sat behind the ball. We used our heads and were outstanding on the night.

Then against Worksop we faced a much more physical challenge where they play a direct style that demands absolute concentration for 90 minutes. We stood up to that physical challenge, fought for everything, and to keep a second clean sheet of the week was very pleasing.

We're not where we want to be in the league table yet but if we play like we did in those games then we will get there.

Finally a thank you to those who worked so hard to organise the Town v Gown games on Thursday. That connection between the club and one of the World's great educational establishments seems to be growing all the time and I hope those of you who came along enjoyed the occasion.

Get behind us again today,

 ROSS

A Bluffer's Guide To
The Turbines

Peterborough Sports  was established in 1908 as Brotherhoods Engineering Works. They joined the Northants League (which later became the United Counties League) for the 1919–20 season, winning the league in their first season.

However, they left at the end of the 1922–23 season, transferring to Division Three of the Peterborough & District League, which they won in 1925–26, earning promotion to Division Two. The club was dormant in 1929–30 and 1932–33, after which they dropped into Division Three North.Despite only finishing eleventh in 1936–37, they were elevated to Division Two for the 1937–38 season. After World War II the club were placed in Division One, where they remained until finishing bottom of the table in 1948–49, resulting in relegation to Division Two. In 1952 the division was renamed Division One as the division above became the Premier Division, but the club finished bottom in 1952–53 and were relegated to the new Division Two. In 1963–64 they were relegated again to Division Three South, but returned to Division Two after a single season.

At the end of the 1973–74 season Brotherhoods Engineering Works were relegated to Division Three South for a second time, but returned to Division Two after winning the Division Three South title in 1975–76. Relegated again in 1979–80, the club returned to Division Two at the first attempt as Division Three South champions, and were promoted to Division One at the end of the 1982–83 season after finishing third. The 1987–88 season saw the club finish as Division One runners-up and earn promotion to the Premier Division. In 1999 the club changed its name to Bearings Direct, and then again in 2001 to Peterborough Sports. In 2006–07 they won the Premier Division, and in 2012–13 were promoted to Division One of the United Counties League after finishing third.

In 2015–16 Peterborough Sports were Division One champions, earning promotion to the Premier Division. They also won the League Cup, beating Holbeach United on penalties in the final, as well as the Northants Junior Cup and the Hinchingbrooke Cup. The following season saw them win the Premier Division with 112 points, earning promotion to Division One South of the Northern Premier League; they also retained the Hinchingbrooke Cup. In 2018 the club were transferred to Division One Central of the Southern League. In 2018–19 the club were Division One Central champions, earning promotion to the Premier Division Central. They finished as runners-up in 2021–22, qualifying for the promotion play-offs.

After beating Alvechurch in the semi-finals, the club defeated Coalville Town 2–0 in the final to earn promotion to the National League North.

When things are going against you a positive outlook is what you need, and if ever you need someone around to help raise spirits then come and meet Isaac Westendorf.

The 24-year-old forward is a remarkable young man, unrelentingly positive and always looking to help those around him

“  I've never been a captain or anything “ he told us “but I realised coming here, this is a young group and we need each other so I want to play a part in that. It’s good to bring my experience here and try to help people like Brayden  and Josh, um, Alfie” he laughs. “Well, no Alfie is a little older than those two but he’s really positive and good with the group too!

“It doesn’t matter what your job is just stay positive and and take every day as it comes because you can't really look too much ahead.”

Isaac’s outlook comes from a devout faith

“It’s thanks to my my Lord and Saviour  Jesus Christ” he says. “Obviously I'm a believer and it's just about me going to church every day, maybe reading a Bible and reminding myself that it's all about helping people. It helps me so much. I'm always happy and in a good place, because even  if it rains, eventually the sun will come through".

That positivity is needed in football where one result can mean so much..

“Exactly. Look, we are privileged to be footballers. It is a fantastic career, but it’s hard at times as well. Your belief gets you through that.

“We had a run of games where we were playing well but not getting results. Thankfully that changed in the last two matches but it is so important to keep reminding yourself how good you are as players, because we know the quality of this squad. In  the first 5 games we played really well and maybe the results weren’t there. It's just about sticking together and it will turn for you".

Is that something you have learned as you got older? Losing on a Saturday still hurts, right?

“ I always give myself 24 hours to get over a defeat. Next day, always after any game I’m in the gym. I'm going to the church, I love books so I read and try to change my focus but that’s the same if we win: enjoy the moment but then that's the past and just focus on the next game.

“We can take massive plusses from the last two games and the way we played . We can't take two steps forward then one step back, we’ve got to  keep going. That's the aim now.

“We  need everyone this season, even if people are not playing,  not making the squad, everyone has a role to play in keeping everyone fighting because like I said, football changes  so quickly. Someone can get injured and if we need someone off the bench or to step into the squad then we need everyone.”

You feed off the crowd as well. The crowd love you here…

“Yes, I see the love and that is what we play the game for. The fans  push me so much, drive me to do well for them. The reason that I play is for those fans but also for the people who do so much: Phil the kitman, the staff behind the scenes. People working in reception, Jordan, Andy Ballard, The Gaffer: Everyone. It’s a fantastic club and those are the people we want to win for.”

OFF THE BALL

CHRIS WILLIAMS

We take professional development seriously at Oxford City and this week saw Eddie Odhiambo take a well-deserved step forward when he became Head of Football, Community & Culture.

I just wanted to add my personal congratulations to one of the good guys, although I also want him to know that he is NOT forgiven.

You see readers, me and Eddie go back a long way. Back in 2006 he was a spindly looking right back who signed for Oxford United and did a great job in the club’s first season back in the Conference, I’d even say that Eddie was one of the main reasons we stayed in the division.

That alerted Stevenage who made him an offer he couldn’t refuse. It speaks volumes for him that he agonised over what should have been a simple decision. He loves Oxford and loved playing for his home town and we had a LONG conversation outside the Kassam Stadium one morning where he opened his heart and asked my opinion. I told him to stay and help the club get back to where they belonged. He ignored me, went to Stevenage, won promotion, played at Wembley. He has rarely listened to me since.

But that incident is not the reason I am writing this.

During his time at Oxford United Eddie was invited to open a new shop in Woodstock. I think it was because the Chairman at the time got discount, but let’s not go in to that right now. On the appointed day I picked Eddie up in my mint green Ford Focus ( I WAS doing well, yes) and we trundled across to the shop and Eddie cut the ribbon to an appreciative audience of four. And two of those were the owners.

Then I drove us back towards Oxford. We chatted away and then ground to an inevitable halt in the roadworks on the ring road, just before Headington Roundabout. We sat, unmoving for 15 minutes, sown in by cones on the two other lanes, and then with growing dread I noticed steam rising from under my bonnet.  Two minutes later and I could no longer see the car in front of me. We were overheating. And we were blocking the entire ring road.

Gingerly I lifted the bonnet and recreated a scene unseen since Saxon emerged from the dry ice at the New Theatre. “We’ll have to wait until it cools down” I said. “Good idea” said Eddie. “You do that. I can get a bus home from Headington Roundabout. See you tomorrow. Hopefully” he said as he waved me goodbye and started weaving through the  cones like it was a training session.

People, it is this sort of leadership and management of others that marked Eddie out, even as a young man.

In true adversity, he took swift, decisive action and I truly appreciate the character building that he pushed my way that fateful afternoon. The only push he managed.

Without Eddie, who knows where I might be today.

 Oh. No. Wait. Headington Roundabout…

You may have seen over the past few months the nationwide campaign that the National League have been running named ‘3 Up’.

We’re encouraging as many supporters and families connected with Oxford City to sign the petition for three promotion spots to the EFL. Sign the petition via the link here:

https://www.change.org/VoteFor3UP

What is it?

The National League’s 3UP campaign aims to establish three promotion places into EFL League Two, bringing it into line with the rest of the professional football pyramid.

Implementing 3UP will increase fairness of the whole system and provide more inspiration to National League clubs, fans and their communities.Levelling up the league with the Premier League and English Football League (EFL) will provide long-term economic benefits and stability to National League clubs plus the local business infrastructures around them.

There are 72 teams in the National League’s three division system plus dozens more clubs currently competing in the EFL that have benefitted from their time in the National League. This is why for our club, fans and community (and others) - this change is a no-brainer.

If you could take two minutes to fill in the petition, it would really help the campaign.
