THE GAFFER
Ross Jenkins
It’s been another busy couple of weeks and we will look to end things positively with a win against Southport this afternoon.
Like ourselves, Southport’s league position maybe doesn’t reflect their performances so far. They have good players and it hopefully sets things up for what we hope will be a very entertaining game for you to enjoy this afternoon.
I enjoyed quite a lot of last Saturday’s game up at Chorley but definitely not the final result, which is strange because you’d usually be pretty pleased with a point on the road. Unfortunately, having gone 2-0 up and dominating the game we let the home side back into it at 2-1. Then, having shown a bit of character to go 3-1 up we repeated the same bad habit and ended up drawing a game that was there for the taking.
Scoring three away from home and not winning was so frustrating, and it was the players I felt most frustrated for because they had given us absolutely everything, like they have done in every game so far. We don’t have the biggest squad in the league and injuries have stretched us over the last few weeks in particular. Jack Bearne, Isaac Westendorf, Alfie Potter and Zac McEachran have all spent more time in the treatment room than on the pitch and missing players of their calibre would hurt any side in the division.
They will all be back over the next few weeks and we have brought in a couple of familiar faces in Ewan Clark and Chris Francis to further strengthen us as we head into the winter months where pitches start to get heavier and you need as many options as possible to cope with everything that an English football season throws at you.
Away from the first team I’d like to congratulate our young players on reaching the First Round Proper of the FA Youth Cup with an excellent 4-0 away win at Portland on Tuesday night. That’s a seriously tough place to go and get a result like that and shows terrific character. We wish them the best of luck in the next round.
Finally, as ever, a thank you to the fans who travelled to Chorley to support us. Get behind us again today and we’ll do all we can to leave you smiling after a win today.
ROSS

A Bluffer’s Guide to Southport
Ah, Southport, seaside, golf , shopping and flower shows. Southport is still one of the most popular seaside resorts in the UK, hosts the largest independent flower show in the country and held the The Open Championship, but we are here to talk about the football club really.
There has been a Southport FC for over 140 years. The first match in the town was in November 1881 after the original Southport Football Club began life as a rugby team. When they got trounced each week they switched to association football! Six of the rugby team lined up in that first game against Bootle 'second'
There were a number of clubs in the town but in the summer of 1888, the year the Football League was founded, it was felt that a team of stronger calibre should be formed and Southport Central came into being, moving to its present home, Haig Avenue. In 1918, the club was renamed as Southport Vulcan – having been bought by the Vulcan Motor Company – the first club to take a sponsor's name.
In 1921 they became founder members of the Third Division North, renamed as good old Southport. They were the first club from the Third Division North to reach the sixth round (quarter-finals) of the FA Cup, where they lost to Everton and 20,010 watched them play Newcastle United in the fourth round of the FA Cup.
Under Billy Bingham they won their first promotion in the 1966/7 season. They were relegated back to the Fourth Division in 1970, but won promotion again in 1973 when they finished as Fourth Division Champions. Relegation back to the Fourth Division followed the very next season and then the Glory Years turned into the Painful Years – they sometimes got crowds of three figures and in 1978 were voted out of the Football League following three consecutive 23rd (out of 24) place finishes. They were the last club to leave the Football League through the re-election process, with Wigan Athletic taking their place.
In 1998 the club had its first trip to Wembley, when they lost 1–0 to Cheltenham Town in the final of the FA Trophy backed by 10,000 Southport fans. They became founder members of the new Conference North in 2004–05, and were the league's first Champions. In 2006 the club changed to full-time, a move that lasted two seasons but by 2008/9 they were back in the Conference North. Only four defeats during 2009–2010 saw Southport promoted and the 2011/12 season saw the 'Port finish in a very impressive 7th place, the club’s highest league finish in 10 years.
Famous former players include Luther Blissett, Peter Davenport, Jimmy Melia, Peter Withe and player/manager Mark Wright. Famous people from Southport include actor Lee Mack, author David Mitchell, and Ryder Cup hero Tommy Fleetwood.
And in case you were wondering why are they called the Sandgrounders? It’s not the club, it’s the town, because it sits on a bed of sand apparently.
There has been more success for the Oxford City Walking Football team with the over 50’s adding more silverware after winning the regional FA Walking Football Cup to progress to national level at St George’s Park.
The team kicked off with a tough 0-0 draw with Worthing then picked up their first win by beating Yatley 2-1.
After beating London Irish 2-0 they had a great 5-1 win over Chelsea which meant they only needed to draw with Watford in their final game to top the league which they duly achieved with a 0-0 draw to go through the competition undefeated.
Walking Football creates a community for those want to play football in their senior years
Eric Marshall, the team’s goalkeeper told us:
“We have an amazing group of lads who are at the top of their game and truly showed their quality to win the southern region competition in convincing style to reach the final at St George’s Park. We can't wait for the finals on November 2nd".

Having joined the cub on loan from Aston Villa in pre-season, young goalkeeper Sam Lewis has played every minute of every game so far in a highly impressive start to his first loan away from Villa Park.
Still only 20, Sam grows in stature and experience with each game he plays and as he told us, the loan is working well for all parties.
“I’m enjoying it” he told us after training on Monday. “It's been slightly different coming in, I was a bit, not apprehensive because I knew it was a good club, but maybe I didn't really know what to expect, But I think Ross is obviously a great Gaffer, the coaches are really good and all the staff have been great.
“The lads helped me settle straight away. We’re quite a close group and a lot of us are similar ages so I think we've all come together really, well. Now we have to translate that into winning more games. Hopefully the results will start picking up our way now, but for me, I think we'll do that and the basics are all in place.
What's the policy at Villa? Does everybody go out on loan at that age?
"Yeah, I think everyone needs to at some point. I was looking to go out in January last season but that didn’t happen but but I think now is the perfect time and I came here looking to play and get games under my belt.
How did you get to Villa in the first place? Who spotted you?
“It was from our Sunday league team, Studley where I am from and where Solihull Moors now train.
"I played in a tournament at under 8s and someone was watching and invited me to trials with Villa. I must have done OK because I've been there ever since. I’ve worked with some great goalkeeping coaches there. Currently it’s a Spanish coach so that’s always going to be different but I think it's great because you learn from everyone you work with. It's all experience and I feel like I am learning all the time. You've got to be able to adapt because football can change, so you learn to be flexible and learn from everything you do.
Looking at the league table, it’s time for City to step up…
“Every game it's been tight; we've been in every game, but last Saturday was a great example. We were in the lead, playing well then let it slip and ended up with a point. In reality a point at a tough ground doesn't look bad but we should have won that game and that’s two or three times we’ve done that, I think it's now just about getting over the line in game and having that desire and mentality to win when we're leading in games. Be ruthless and defend the box to see games through. We've played quite a lot of tough opposition and we competed. If you look at it, our performances to points ratio is probably not adding up at the moment, but I'm sure that will change
You mentioned being a young team; how tough is it to be a young keeper in what can be a bruising league?
It’s physical , I knew it would be but that’s going to help my game. I'm getting more and more comfortable with the physicality. If teams start loading the balls in the box, we've all got to be strong and deal with that.. The relationship is strong between us and we’ve had a pretty settled back four We all get along well. which is important.
Has what’s expected from a goalkeeper changed, even since you started?
Definitely. especially the last 3 or 4 years. I think it has changed to more playing out, but I think now you've seen it in this season in the Premier League where it’s gone more long ball; the long throw threat has grown so keepers have to adapt again.
Have Villa coaches been coming to watch?
Yes, they've been coming down every game which is good to know.
And you don't think that's more to do with Burnout BBQ?
“Maybe, I hadn’t thought of if like that!
Finally, Saturday at home to Southport, it’s time to start winning games again?
“We stopped the rot last Saturday and got a decent point away from home. Now we have to build on that. We’ve trained well this week, we’ve got players coming back into the squad, a couple of new faces and if we can get three points on Saturday in front of our own fans, that’s such a positive for us and hopefully sets us off on a string of good results.”

The Hoops Foundation

Let me start by welcoming an old friend this afternoon, Southport’s COO Andy Burgess. ‘Burge’ was an elegant, talented midfielder who starred for Rushden and Diamonds and they surged into the Football League and was then bang average at Oxford United for a short time when Brian Talbot signed him at the Kassam Stadium.
I won’t go into details but there were reasons behind that and Andy was at Oxford United at the worst possible time but in hard times strong friendships are forged and we have stayed mates ever since. However, our reunion today allows me to bring you a story I’ve never managed to tell anyone before…
Remember then, that Andy joined Oxford United from Rushden and Diamonds where he is their record appearance holder and a club legend. I was the head of comms and whenever we visited Nene Park we presumed that Andy would get a fantastic reception from his former admirers. How wrong we were.
At one game the atmosphere was particularly toxic and Andy foolishly tried to ghost past a Rushden defender. This so angered his former teammate Darren Caskey that he flew in to a two footed challenge that left Burge in a heap and led to John Dempster getting a red card for racing across the pitch to shove Caskey over.
In a press box you are usually asked to be neutral observers. Do not celebrate goals, do not wear club colours, do not get involved with fans. And, in my view, definitely do not leap to your feet and shout “Have that Burgess you traitor. Hope you’ve broken your leg.”
As soon as the Rushden journalist bellowed that I saw red. It’s bad enough breaking press box decorum, but shouting that towards a player you love(d), as a stretcher was called for, seemed outrageous and I simply wasn’t having it…
Off I stomped across the press box, red of face and eyes out on stalks. “YOU” I shouted, startling the sleepy Nick Harris of BBC Oxford as a I passed. “That is out of order…”. By now fans were turning and I had the eyes of the media on me. Somehow it was ME that was the bad guy! Worse followed. As I approached him I tripped over a flight case and stumbled full force into my foe, shoving him in the chest. It didn’t look great.
Luckily my wingman, Julian Hitchman, had followed me along and got in between us, dragging me away to calm down and wait until my face was less purple. We're still waiting.
Readers, I am not proud of that day, but I tell it as a warning to others. In the press box, you need to behave. Remember where you are and who you work for. Trade in being a fan and, if needed, sit on your hands.
Come and ask me about this today. I’ll be sitting in the press box. Gatey will be holding my coat…

Defender arrives at the Hoops
We were pleased to announce the signing of Central Defender Chris Francis this week.
Chris signed with the Hoops after leaving Premier League side Crystal Palace in the summer, a spell which also saw him head out on loan to Dagenham & Redbridge last season in The National League.
After signing with City, Chris said: “I feel good. It’s a good opportunity for me to get some games, especially at this stage of the season, and I’m really looking forward to it.
“I’ve been training hard. I’m fit, I’m ready and I think this is the right time to come here.”
Francis started his career with Swindon Town before he joined local side North Leigh under Eddie Odhiambo (who now heads up our Velocity Football College Programme).
From there, the defender impressed from the get-go, and soon caught the eye of Premier League sides before AFC Bournemouth won his signature.
He spent time on loan with National League South side Weymouth in 2022/23 during his spell with The Cherries before he secured a move to Crystal Palace in August 2023.
He was a mainstay in the U21 side at Selhurst Park during his stay at Selhurst Park, spending a spell on loan at Dagenham & Redbridge last season.
Now, he links up with Ross Jenkins’ squad for the 2025/26 season and bolsters the squad’s defensive ranks.
Chris is available to sponsor for the season. To find out more - click HERE.
