THE GAFFER

Lyon Theoharous

On behalf of the entire Women's staff and players we'd like to thank you for coming along to support us once again on what I am sure will be a fantastic occasion.

The way the fans got behind us in the last two cup games was a major driving force in getting us this far in this competition and we are determined to reward that support with another memorable performance this afternoon.

Without doubt this will be our biggest test of the season. Swindon are a very good side and have been in excellent form this season, but I know one thing: we're not going to leave the ground today wondering what might have been. Instead everyone involved will give it absolutely everything we have and if you do that in cup football anything can happen.

We had a good win in the County Cup last week, we enjoyed another good evening when we took on the University in the Town v Gown game and training has had that little bit more of a buzz because we have been building towards playing in front of a big crowd today.

For a club at our level to get 500 fans, then 700, and then possibly even more today is incredible and just underlines the potential that this club, and this group of players in particular, have.

We won't let the occasion overwhelm us, we will be ready, and with your support let's see if we can keep this adventure going.

Get behind the players, be loud, be proud, and believe...

Our Visitors: Swindon Town

Swindon Town Women were founded in 1993, after several players broke away from the established Swindon Spitfires WFC, which was formed in 1967.

They  began playing in Division Four of the South West Regional Women's Football League the same year, won the league, and promotion, in their first season, and went on to win two more league titles in the next two seasons. After a couple of seasons playing in Division One, they joined the newly formed South West Combination in 1998.

The 1998 / 1999 Season saw Swindon Town Ladies elected to be founder members of the F.A. South West Combination League. They finished the inaugural season in Third place and won the “Ambassador” South West Combination League Cup, beating Cheltenham 4-0 in the Final. They Town also set a record when the starting line – up of the County Women's Team were all from the same club.

At the start of the 2002 / 2003 Season Swindon Town Ladies merged with Coleview Girls and ran teams at Under 10, 12 and 14 level as well as the two senior teams. In 2006 the club moved towards single aged banding and ran teams from under 8; 9; 10; 11; 12; 13; 14; and since the age requirement to play Senior football had been raised from 14 to 16, under 15 and 16 teams were also added, giving the total number of players within the club in excess of 140 players.

With the structure of women's football in England being re-organised due to the introduction of FA WSL 2 in 2014, Swindon Town were moved into the new South West Division One of the FA Women's Premier League. They almost won the division at their first attempt, but a three-point deduction for fielding an ineligible player cost them the title, leaving them in third place at the end of the season, just one point off the top of the table.

The club currently has three teams; its First Team currently compete in the FA Women's National League South West, while it continues to have a Development Team who compete in the South West Regional Women's Football League.

Oxford City would like to thank Manor Flooring for sponsoring new warm up tops for this cup run and for their continued support.

Manor Flooring are sponsoring the Women's team for the third year in a row but it’s a partnership that goes back way further than that as Managing Director Dan Burgess told us:

“It goes back to pre-lockdown so that seems a long time now! It started seven years ago when my daughter joined the under 12s and I got to see behind the scenes and how City are growing the women and girls side of the club and my involvement has grown each year because I share that commitment and love helping football in my local community.

“I’ve been sponsoring the Development side for a while and that grew to include the First Team a couple of years ago.

Manor Flooring is an established Oxfordshire based flooring company with over 25 years experience in supplying and fitting all types of flooring across the UK specialising in Karndean, but also real wood, all carpet types and sheet vinyl. They offer free quotes and estimates backed by an unrivalled aftercare service to all customers and pride themselves on the high level of personal service that see customers coming back time and time again.

Anna O'Leary

Big day for City midfielder

"

Today will be a big day for Oxford City Women but for one player in particular it promises to be particularly memorable.

Midfielder Anna O’Leary will play a big part in City’s team to face Swindon Town as they try to reach further in the competition than they ever have before, but to do so she has had to make quite a choice: She graduates from Oxford University on the same day…

“It couldn’t have been worse timing!” she told us. “I loved my time at the University and put a huge amount of work into my PGCE at uni and in schools on placement so was really looking forward to celebrating. But we’ve also worked hard as a team to get this far in the FA Cup and it's already a fantastic achievement. I had to make a decision and in the end I just couldn’t miss the match! The dream is to win and we're going to do everything in our control to make sure we end the day in celebrations. Then I guess the graduation celebrations will come later...

"How hard has it been to combine studying with playing football at City?

“It’s been fantastic to combine my two real passions. I have had to juggle my time here and there, alongside playing for the university too, but that’s not so unusual. All the girls work unbelievably hard on and off the pitch. Ellie Walecki, for example, often turns up for training in her paramedic uniform because she drives an ambulance as her ‘day job’ and Billie Bough-French teaches kids in a primary school: all of us have other commitments. To be able to balance all of that with reaching the second round proper is all credit to the girls.”

Anna knows that the Hoops face a tough task as they welcome Swindon Town Women to the MGroup Stadium.

“It’s going to be a really hard game. Swindon are in a higher league and have players who have played at the highest level. They will want to make progress and get on a decent run themselves but we are determined not to let all the hard work go to nothing. And it's the FA Cup so anything can happen... We have left it late in the last couple of FA Cup games but we have a togetherness and spirit and we will have our fans there again.

“To have so many fans coming to support us is incredible. The atmosphere is amazing and inspiring: especially seeing all the young girls there supporting us. That’s what we want to do: show those young players that they can play football and be whatever they want to be.”

Meet the Players: come and see the team before the game

There’s a rivalry between Oxford and Swindon that stretches way beyond the football pitch. The A420 is a short journey, and was the route which workers at a Swindon car factory chose to take to break a picket line at the Oxford branch in Cowley, often seen as the trigger point that took the rivalry to a new level.

It’s easy for us in Oxford with our 60 world leaders, 30 prime ministers, 55 Nobel Prize winners, and 120 Olympic medal winners to gloat, but be fair Swindon gave us Diana Dors and Mark Lamarr.

All of that is forgotten this afternoon where it is a friendly rivalry. Genuinely. I have old friends in the Swindon camp and they look to be building quite a team. I wish them well for the future, but only after today’s game is complete.

For now I just wanted to mention a few people who will be overlooked on a day like this. I am not going to name names because I will miss someone out, but look around you today and every single member of staff you see is here on their day off! Like we are for every women’s game. Volunteers will be running the club shop, announcing the teams, taking pictures, working in hospitality, helping fans have a great time.

That’s the key. Coming to watch Oxford City Women is all about having  a great team.

Burnout BBQ provide great food, staff smile and make you welcome (NB  maybe not Shaun, he’s still tired from a trip to South Shields in midweek but get him a cuppa, he’ll be fine), hundreds of young footballers will meet the players before kick off and still be here to greet them after the final whistle has blown.

I bang on about this a lot. This is an amazing football club. It is not just one team, it is a club that works so hard in its local community and days like today make me feel so proud. All we hope is that when you leave this evening you go away thinking what a great day you had - win, lose or draw - and that you come back and see us again.

The Women’s team are here every other Sunday. Join our fast-growing family.
