THE GAFFER
Ross Jenkins
After two really positive games on the road it’s good to be preparing for two home matches this week where we can look to carry that momentum forward and get ourselves closer to where we need to be in the league table.
The win away at Worksop on Saturday was the result of hard work and a genuine belief in each other among this group of players. We played well and got three points but I actually think we have played better in a number of away games this season and come away with nothing. This time we took our chances, defended well when we needed to and I hope the fans who travelled to support us enjoyed the trip home as much as we did after a job well done.
The previous weekend we picked up a decent point at Leamington. Credit to their staff for getting the game on after so many others were postponed due to the rain, but I think the pitch definitely played a part in what became a real slog of a game. In this division you have to prepare for anything, that’s part of the appeal, so at times you just have to roll your sleeves up and battle. A clean sheet and a point away from home is OK, and then winning the next game probably made that point seem more valuable.
We are making progress all the time but it’s still incredibly close at the bottom of the table. It’s far too early to be looking at results elsewhere, we just need to stick together, stay positive and focus on our own results. Marine will tell you the same about the chase for the play-off places and will be just as keen as us to get a win today.
That should make for a great game for you to watch. Get behind us, make some noise, and let’s make sure that we are the ones smiling at full time this afternoon.
ROSS
Spelling it Out:
Marine
M is for Marine FC, formed in 1894 by a group of local businessmen and former college students. Marine takes its name from a hotel on the River Mersey where the founders of the club met.
A is for Assistance. In 2021, Marine reached the third round of the FA Cup, which they lost 5–0 to Tottenham Hotspur. With Marine 161 places below Tottenham, the gap between the two teams was the biggest in FA Cup history. The match raised over £300,000 for the club from the selling of 32,202 "virtual tickets" to fans of Tottenham and other clubs who wished to support Marine but were unable to attend the match due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
R is for Rossett Park, home since 1903. It is believed that the ground has been in use since at least 1884 when rugby union was played there. The ground's current capacity is 3,185, of which 389 are seated, but in 1949, Marine played host to Nigeria at Rossett Park, and the crowd on that day was officially given as 4,000 although some observers considered it to be 6,000.
I is for Incredible. In 1972 Roly Howard was appointed first team manager and completed 1,975 competitive games over a 33-year period before he retired at the end of the 2004–05 season. He was recognised by the Guinness Book of Records as the longest serving manager in world football as Marine enjoyed its most successful period, winning some 30 trophies. His assistant for an astonishing 28 years was the aptly-named Roger Patience.
N is for Northern Premier League. When Marine were relegated to the Northern Premier League Division One North West in 2019 it was the first relegation in their history, and followed 40 consecutive seasons at the highest level of the Northern Premier League. Marine finished 5th in the 2021/22 season then won the play-offs after coming from behind to beat Runcorn Linnets to regain their place in the Northern Premier League Premier Division. The following year, Marine earned a second promotion in three years; being promoted to the National League North following a 2–1 victory away to Macclesfield.
E is for Ex Players. Jason McAteer (born 18 June 1971) began his career at Marine before moving on to Bolton Wanderers, Liverpool, Blackburn Rovers, Sunderland and finally Tranmere Rovers, as well as winning over 50 international caps for the Republic of Ireland. His total transfer values reached over £9 million, plus a bag of balls and a roof…
“I was playing for Marine” he said “and I went on trial with Bolton. After three or four days Bolton offered me a contract and I went back to Marine and said I’m leaving. As a goodwill gesture Bolton gave them £500 and a bag of balls. And, as a big storm had taken the roof off the Marine clubhouse the week I signed for Bolton, they used the £500 to get a new roof. So my value then was a bag of balls and a roof.”
City Beat United in County Cup
City in Safe Hands
An incredible ending saw Oxford City upset the odds to beat Oxford United 3-2 at the MGroup Stadium in the quarter-final of the Oxfordshire Senior Cup
After Josh Parker had given the Hoops an early lead goals from Gatlin O'Donkor and Jack Lee put United ahead in time added on. Amazingly, City kept going and goals from Brayden Daniel and Jack Bearne somehow sent them through
City used the game to ease players such as Bearne, Tom Scott and Evan Humphries back to full fitness while promising players like Daniel, Byron Wilson and Josh McConnell were given game time after featuring on the bench in recent first team games. The other youngster to truly step up was Man of the Match Caleb Moir who gave an assured performance at centre-half despite coming up against the far more experienced O’Donkor on his comeback from injury.
It turned into a memorable match with two energetic sides playing neat passing football throughout
O’Donkor’s strike partner Lee had the first chance of the night but found Jonny Maxted equal to it when he let fly from 20 yards in the 12th minute but it was former United striker Parker who reminded the youngsters how to do it after 15 minutes when he picked up a Bearne cross, turned sharply and buried a low shot past the helpless Monty Marriott in the United goal.
However at the other end former City loanee O’Donkor's pace and power looked ominous and on 26 minutes he got the U’s back on equal terms when he raced clear and powered the ball past Maxted with a thunderous blast into the roof of the net.
City might have regained a half-time lead when the impressive McConnell sent a well-struck effort just wide in time added on but six minutes after the break Lee put United ahead from the spot after tricky winger Kasway Burton was upended by Humphries just inside the box..
O'Donkor's (scheduled) withdrawal at the break certainly took away much of the threat from the away side and most of the second half was played in the United half. Sub George Burroughs flicked a header just over from a corner then repeated that after a Parker header across the face of goal The only question was whether City could find the goal that would take the game to penalties. They went one better.
First Daniel, a winner last season with Thame, burst through a challenge and powered down the right and slotted past Marriott to make it 2-2 after 96 minutes
A minute later and there was true drama as Bearne somehow had the energy to sprint away on the opposite flank and fire across Marriott to send City into the semi-finals.
Amazing.
With City ending the game with six home grown players up against eleven in yellow this was a fine advert for Oxford football, played in the right spirit; competitive but never dirty. Just what the competition is all about as Eddie Odhiambo, Head of Football, Community and Culture at the club, told us
“It was a really encouraging night. Caleb Moir was chosen as Player of the Match, Brayden Daniel scored the second goal and Josh McConnell, Charlie Bacon, Kauan and Endri Stathi were all out there on the pitch at the end.
“It was good for Oxford football to see them playing against a United team which has all come through their Academy and I think we can be really proud of our performance and the result.
“With the Under 19s in good form in the league after a great FA Youth Cup run where they ended up taking on QPR at Loftus Road we have seen real progress with players stepping up from the Velocity programme, and that is running parallel to the Women’s team where over half the team last Sunday are on a similar pathway.
“Most of those players have had loan spells locally so they are learning all the time and I think it was a great advertisement for the competition as well.”
CITY
Maxted, Wilson, Moir, Bearne, McFarlane (Kauan 46), Wiggett (Burroughs 46), Parker (Stathi 67), Scott (Bacon 84), Humphries (Roddy 67), Daniel, McConnell
Callum Leading The Line
There’s been a new face up front for the Hoops in the last few games with Callum McFarlane adding his energy and know how after joining the club on loan from Solihull.
The Fulham academy graduate joined The Moors last summer after a successful time at Wealdstone, and spent the first part of this season on loan with fellow NLN side Hereford.
“It was a really fresh start for me and I think the biggest thing was an opportunity to play” he told us. “With the Manager and the players here, they’ve really helped me make the most of the opportunity and I’ve started the last couple of games and really enjoyed it.
"It's a platform to thrive on, and I think the philosophy that the manager wants to incorporate into the team to play good football and break down teams is a major attraction for me coming here as well.
”One of the first things I noticed coming in was that the players Manager and staff are really close. You can have a conversation with any of them. They have all been really welcoming and friendly and it’s been a pleasure I think before you join a club you look at the table and wonder what the mood is like. We're not in an ideal situation towards the bottom of the table, but I think there’s a great culture here that’s not necessarily built from results.
"It's the people that make a club so it's great to come in and be such a big part of this community so quickly.
"I think that togetherness will give us a real drive to pull away from trouble, We know we have the ability to make it out of the relegation zone, and I think that will stem from the culture and environment here and hopefully transfer to the pitch".
And that first goal's, not far away, right?
"Yeah, I mean, I'm hoping it comes on Saturday. As a striker if you don't get a goal straight away, you have to be patient, resilient and just keep getting to those areas to score. I've had a couple of shots on target, but nothing clear really so I’ll stay patient, and hopefully that opportunity comes.
“And if I can take it and help the team get another win that’s the main thing.”
ON THE ROAD
Leamington
There is no point hoping to sample the waters of Leamington Spa if you are going to Leamington FC. At the Your COOP Community Stadium there IS plenty of water, but it is mostly absorbed into the playing surface and has seen staff working through the night to get rid of it. Their hard work has paid off and it is game on today. Forking brilliant.
It’s a new ground for me. I’ve visited Leamington Spa many times though as it is home to a really cool music venue, plus I have woken up groggily here at least twice after falling asleep on the train from Marylebone to Haddenham. It’s a nice town, one which grew quickly in the 19th century when new bridges connected the diverse villages. That plus the fashion for ‘taking the waters’ led to expansion and after Queen Victoria visited in 1858 it became Royal Leamington Spa.
I doubt she would have been amused at visiting the football ground almost 170 years on. There is a gravel car park pocked by puddles and by the time photographer Darrel Fisher and I squelch our way to the turnstiles our ankles are caked in brown mud. In 2001 when Oxford United left the Manor Ground Leamington bought the turnstiles, floodlights and seats, but close inspection of both today suggests they have been upgraded over the last 25 years. United sold the pitch twice too- ask me about it some day.
The Brakes (the nickname comes from a time when the club was Lockheed Leamington, Lockheed being a major employer in the town and manufacturer of braking systems) also seem to have inherited the Manor’s slope. At the bottom of this is a terraced stand which slots neatly in front of the red brick clubhouse. I have a nosey inside and a chat with the hardy bunch of away fans who have made the shortest trip of the National League North season. I sample a burger from the van: with no other buildings anywhere near the food and beverage at the club has a captive audience for the crowd of just over 600 to enjoy.
I flick through the matchday programme, printed by minuteman of Coventry, then am transported back in time as I find a wooden shed optimistically labelled as ‘The Programme Shop’ This is great. The shopkeeper doesn’t shift from the floor where he is seated, counting past issues of programmes from clubs across the land. I pick up the nearest box (only because I think this might annoy him) and am delighted to find that the box is full of Braintree, Solihull and Kidderminster Harriers programmes and I am in all of them! I read a couple of old ‘Off the Ball’ articles, nicking the jokes for future use, and finally realise why nobody buys programmes any more.
One of my favourite things is to send Darrell out to take photographs in the rain while I sit in the dry at the back of a stand. Today he heads off into the light drizzle while I open my laptop and snuggle up next to Ewan Clark for warmth. Ewan is on co-commentary today, alongside Oxford’s very own Magic Mic Andy Gate.
Kicking up the slope, City start strongly and have the bulk of possession. Jacob Roddy thumps a volley against the post, it hits the sprawling keeper and skids wide as they press for the opener. On a pudding of a pitch Leamington play the percentages and lump it forward but Charlie Wiggett and Aaron Harper-Bailey dominate and keeper Jonny Maxted has little reason to get his bright pink kit muddy.
Just before the break comes the game’s defining moment. Alfie Potter (my Man of the Match) chases a ball that defies the conditions and bounces up enough for a covering defender to have to deal with it. His method is more volleyball than Association Football but City’s loud penalty appeals are waved away. Judge for yourself.
There is (briefly) an outcry before the game resumes for the second half.
Again City have plenty of the ball and Josh Ashby’s free kick bounces off the post, but Leamington are improved and test Maxted with a couple of long range efforts. Comfortable enough but under the conditions they needed dealing with.
In the end neither team can conjure up a goal and a 0-0 does little to ease relegation concerns in either camp. City have, as ever, fought for every ball but in reality the atrocious conditions have probably beaten both sides today.
We wade to the car and head for home, fuelled by jaffa cakes and a shared belief that a point on the road is always welcome, even if today feels like all three were there for the taking. So near, so Spa
City Women Through to County Cup Final
Oxford City Women travel to Badshot Lea tomorrow (2pm) as they look to get back to winning ways after a blank weekend.
The team progressed to the Final of the Oxfordshire County Cup last weekend after Easington forfeited the tie as they were unable to field a team. City will now play the winners of this weekend's other semi-final between Kidlington and Barton.
As Manager Lyon Theoharous told us, the final will be a game to look forward to:
"Obviously that's not how we wanted to get through but it happened and now we have a great opportunity to win a trophy at the end of the season. That's not for a while though and first of all we have to finish as high up the league as we can, starting with a good performance at Badshot Lea on Sunday."

OFF THE BALL
CHRIS WILLIAMS
The Current Mrs Williams noticed the scratching first. It wasn't me, for once. The ointment has sorted that for me.
“There’s something in the loft” she opined. “I’ll sort it” I said, with zero intention of doing anything . I mean, what could it be? Best case scenario was a bird flapping around and pooing on my collection of vintage football programmes. Worst case, I’d open the hatch and have a rat staring at me. For a young man brought up on James Herbert novels this was not an option.
Then one day last week it stopped raining for half an hour and I looked out to see a squirrel running along my garden fence. Putting two and two together I rushed out , grabbed a ladder and a can of expanding spray and blocked the hole in my fascia board. Sorted.
Well readers, how was I to know there might be TWO squirrels? Now I have one on the fence staring at its former hole and another trapped on the inside wondering how to get out. I refuse to go up again; starved and light deprived it might go for my nuts, it’s over to The Current Mrs W to sort out that one. She tentatively went up the ladder this week. In a tense moment I shouted "Boo' and now it's not just the squirrel I'm frightened of.
It reminded me of the infamous Estonian in my shed story. Once upon a time I was left a plot of land at Beckley, right at the foot of the tower. We’d grow vegetables and spend happy autumnal afternoons picking the fruit from the trees my grandfather planted, like the Darling Buds of May minus the distraction of Catherine Zeta-Jones eyeing up your plums.
There was a small shed on site, formerly used for chickens, and one day I had a call from a neighbour who said “I think there’s someone living in your shed. I met him. He’s from Estonia.”
Well, what am I supposed to do about that? Do you have squatter rights if you live in a Chicken Coop? Like the squirrel, I figured it might sort itself out without me having to get involved but eventually I plucked up courage and went to see what had happened. Thankfully, he had moved on, presumably before the weather turned Baltic but not before he had gone round the surrounding villages and sold all the apples!
In the end I sold the land but not before I set fire to it in full Scorched Earth fashion. It was Oxford United’s fault. After ten years at the Kassam Stadium there were boxes and boxes of ticket stubs and paper that needed to be got rid of. Myself and a lad called Chris Wilkins (now a highly-respected scout for a Premier League club) loaded them all into the kit van and set off for Beckley where we built a huge bonfire. I hid behind the Estonian Lodge while Chris set it alight. Only, we had put it too close to the hedge and the whole thing went up.
Through thick white smoke we beat at the hedge with our club tracksuits until the flames died down and we could retreat to the stadium, soot-blackened smelling like ashtrays and little bits of ticket stock attached to our scorched scalps.
"I walked round the pitch and could see the smoke from here" a colleague told us.
Happy days.
I'm pleased to report that you're safe, readers. The MGroup Stadium is a paperless ticket system.
