THE GAFFER
Ross Jenkins
After an excellent result last week it's important that we show the same commitment, spirit and intent today as we welcome the league leaders. South Shields are a very good side and deserve to be where they are in the table but I'm sure they will have looked at our performance against Fylde last week and will know they are in for a tough game this afternoon.
I was obviously delighted with that Fylde result. We often get plaudits for playing good football, and I thought we did that once again, but we also had a fierce determination in all areas of the pitch. Jonny Maxted, Aaron Harper-Bailey and Evan Humphries were all making their debuts in a new look defence and along with Darnell and George there was a real pride in winning their battles and keeping a clean sheet.
Further forward we worked so hard for each other and I thought we were full value for the win. Ewan took his goal really well and if we can follow up that display with a similar one today then it should be a great game for you all to enjoy.
We would have loved to play at Hereford on Tuesday because there was a real buzz about the place in training on Monday but the weather got the better of us so we will travel there another night. We trained on Tuesday night instead and driving home in the dark through the floods I'm not going to argue with the decision to postpone the game! It has given us slightly longer to get people fit after knocks and illness and we will be ready for today.
We'll have to do it without Isaac Westendorf who will be out for a few weeks with a fracture, a big loss, but as we have seen we have players competing for places all over the park so it is up to everyone in the squad, whether they are in the team or not, to keep pushing each other, keep driving us forward, and get us to where we want to be.

A Bluffers Guide to
South Shields FC
When were they formed?
A few references have been found that allude to the origins of a town football club playing in the early 1870s on a recreation field rented from a local farmer but the first recorded public appearance of a named South Shields Association Football Club came in 1888 when they played a number of friendly games.
Who was the driving force?
Jack Inskip is credited with the formation of a junior club in 1899 of local school boys from the Adelaide Street area of Laygate, that was ultimately elected into membership of the Football League in 1919.
Plain sailing from then on?
Not exactly. The club has enjoyed days of great success and also periods of severe reversal and twice of total extinction, resurrected on both occasions.
The Golden Years were prior to World War One with numerous records made and smashed, plus two consecutive North Eastern League championship titles won, in which seasons only four games were lost. In 1915 Shields amassed a new record with a huge 160, and centre forward Irvine Thornley ended the season with 70 goals. And then war broke out…
What are the club colours?
There’s a nice story of the original colours. Because of the town’s maritime connections the club originally played in red and green, representing port and starboard.
You said they folded twice?
Correct. First time, with crowds dwindling the team moved to play at Gateshead in 1930, eventually merging, so in 1936 a new team was formed in the town and joined the North Eastern League, again playing in red and green squares. This was widely acknowledged as one of the better non-league clubs in the country in the 1950s. The ground at Simonside Hal was developed backed by the endeavours of a supporters’ club with a recorded membership of over 13,000. But in 1974 the club folded, with loss of the ground of Simonside Hill and all effects. This was highly controversial but the club again went to Gateshead, for the second time in 44 years and re-emerged as Gateshead United, which took the place of South Shields in the Northern Premier League.
A new club, the South Shields Mariners FC, was born and a new ground was needed. In 1992, the redundant and vandalised sports club and ground of Filtrona FC became available, and the club again rebuilt itself. But, of course, it went wrong! When the club’s lease on Filtrona Park expired it was forced to move 20 miles down the road, to Peterlee’s Eden Lane, as a temporary measure. This exile from South Tyneside lasted for two seasons, and during that time, the club faced a real battle to survive
The exile ended when new chairman Geoff Thompson bought Filtrona Park – which he renamed Mariners Park in the summer of 2015 to start a new era at the club. Ground improvements followed with three new stands and a new 3G facility installed adjacent to the main grass pitch. Shields were on the up again, winning the Northern League, Northern League Cup and Durham Challenge Cup before adding the icing to the cake by lifting the FA Vase at Wembley - the first national trophy in the Mariners' history. On 10 April 2023, South Shields defeated Whitby Town 1–0 to clinch the Northern Premier League title and earn promotion to the National League North, their first season in the sixth tier since their reforming in 1974.
Tell us a fact to impress our mates
In 1947, Chris Marron scored ten goals for Shields in an FA Cup preliminary round tie played at the Cleadon Recreation Ground against Radcliffe Colliery Welfare, winning 13-0.This is the all-time individual goalscoring record, and was included in the Guinness Book Of World Records
Any Celebrity fans?
As part of the club’s bid to become increasingly community-owned, a share scheme was launched in October 2020 which went on to raise almost £380,000 as 1,000 people invested to become shareholders. Among them was Little Mix star Jade Thirlwall, who is proudly from South Shields and became the club’s honorary president in August 2020.
Here's Jonny
City in Safe Hands
There was a new face in goal for City last weekend as experience keeper Jonny Maxted made his debut, helping the side keep a clean sheet in the win over high-flying Fylde
Maxted joins with a wealth of EFL experience, which includes two promotions. One of which was the Enterprise National League North title with Brackley last season.
Manager Ross Jenkins said on his new signing “Jonny comes in with lots of experience and knowledge which will only benefit the group. He knows the league well and gained promotion last season so those experiences will be great for our younger players in the team. We’re delighted to have him onboard.”
Maxted started his career at Doncaster Rovers, before playing for Hartlepool United and Forest Green Rovers. He switched to then National League side Guiseley where he was credited with helping The Lions reach the second round of the FA Cup for the first time in their history after they beat Accrington Stanley 4-3 on penalties. His performance must’ve caught the eye of the Accrington Stanley management, as he signed for Stanley for an undisclosed fee in January 2018, making his debut against Notts County and keeping a clean sheet in a 1–0 home win.
He then joined Exeter City in 2019 and he was nominated for January 2020 EFL League Two player of the month after keeping four consecutive clean sheets in the league.
On 29 June 2020 he played for Exeter City in the behind closed doors League Two play-off final. After 26 appearances for the Grecians between 2019 and 2021, he made the switch to Northampton Town, where he was part of the Cobbler's League Two winning squad.
Jonny moved from Northampton Town to Newport County in July 2023 and made his debut for Newport in the starting line-up for the EFL Cup 1–1 draw against Brentford, which Brentford won on penalties. Last season, he joined Brackley after leaving the Welsh club and helped the Northamptonshire side to the Enterprise National League North title by keeping 22 clean sheets in 50 appearances.
“I’d been in for a week and got to know all the lads” he said after the Fylde win. “To make my debut and keep a clean sheet was a great start. Last season with Brackley we had plenty of 1-0 wins so it’s just a case of seeing those games out.
“You need to stay patient, don’t do anything stupid when you are in possession and as a defence if the ball has to go then it has to go! I thought we saw it out really well as a team and now we want to carry that on against another good side in South Shields
"There is quality here and having spoken with the lads we know what we have to do. There are moments in games, maybe ten or fifteen minutes, where we need to see it out. Whether that’s making sure we get to half time or seeing it through in the last few minutes, both are just as important. Hopefully I can pass on my experience and help in those big moments and help get us moving up the table".
Ewan Loving Life With The Hoops
I surprise Ewan Clark as we sit down to have a chat in the Clubhouse on Monday. “That’s three goals in the last three home games” I tell him. “Oh yeah, hadn’t thought about that" he says after a slight pause.
“I've never been someone to score a lot of goals” he says with a laugh.”I've always been someone to create, but I know that I've got to add that to my game. The last couple of games I’ve been getting in the right positions, and for once I'm taking my time when I'm in front of goal. I feel like when I'm in there, I'm not rushing like in previous years.
“Just playing in that position every week and getting that game time you just get a lot more relaxed . I think coming back here has worked out really well and I’m enjoying my football. The fact the goals have come at home in front of our fans is good too. They have been immense
" I said to the boys before the game last Saturday that I could really hear the fans and it felt nice but that support comes from results and I completely get any frustration they have had. We’ve got to start winning and give them a reason to want to sing. Hopefully we did that against Fylde and we can carry that on against South Shields.
“We've had a habit this season of not putting results together. We’re heading into February so it’s time to put that right. If you can put three wins together in this league you shoot right up the table But we’ve talked about it before, how we were so good in one game, then the next game we've not turned up and we look like complete different players, myself included,
“I think if we look at the game against Buxton and every player was absolutely brilliant. And then you look at how we played at Macclessfield where we looked a shadow of ourselves. This is a tough league, and we’re a young squad, we haven't got maybe that experience some other teams do, but maybe we can make that work to our benefit and everyone has a voice”.
Ewan returned to the club after spells at Bristol City and Bath City so having played in both is there any difference between National League North and South?
“They are both very physical, a lot of kicks and elbows. But I would say the North is a little bit more physical and you’ve got to run a lot harder! But it’s maybe a little more tactical and teams like to play a little more. Both leagues the pitches vary and both have teams that play out as well as teams that play longer so there's not a massive difference, but there's definitely a difference with physicality.
"I don’t mind the hard work and will always run and put in the effort. I think the Gaffer gets that out of me the best. He took me from when I had no club to now. I want to run for the team. I want to run through brick walls and score goals no matter the the physicality or the size of the opponent, it doesn't faze me! I'll keep going. Kick me as much you like, I'll keep getting up and keep going.”
One thing that Ewan will tell you without hesitation is that City can get out of trouble and start pulling away from the drop zone.
“Definitely. We've got enough to get out of this. You look at our squad, we have players who have won promotion into the National League nd we've got a lot of experience. I mentioned I'm a young lad but I've still played probably nearly 100 games in the National League and we've got enough to get out. We wouldn't have beaten the teams we have this season otherwise. Now we've just got to keep going and keep that consistency. Do that and we’ll be fine.”
City Women Take on Reading
Oxford City Women are at home tomorrow afternoon as they welcome Reading in the League (2pm)
Last weekend the team went through to the next round of the Chairman’s Cup with another dramatic 3-2 win at Wimborne.
Top scorer Ellie White again led the way with two goals, the first to break the ice from the penalty spot after 36 minutes before Yas Edwards made it 2-0 at the break to seemingly give City an unassailable lead. However the Dorset side hit back and piled on the pressure to make it 2-2 with 20 minutes to go before White settled the nerves with another expertly taken goal to win the game 3-2 with her fifteenth goal of the season,
Manager Lyon Theoharous told us:
“We got through, which is obviously the aim, but it was another fantastic game of cup football where we showed character and had to battle our way into the next round. We talked at half time about staying strong after getting 2-0 up away from home so we knew Wimborne would come at us. To go again after they got back to 2-2 was a great effort and with such a young side, including Kira Ranxha on her debut, there are so many positives to take from the game.”

OFF THE BALL
CHRIS WILLIAMS
South Shields is NOT in the south. It’s about as north as you can get. Much further north than Northampton. Southend is in the east. I will grant you that Southampton is on the south coast though. It’s just along from West Wittering. Port Vale isn’t a port. And don’t get me started on West Ham….
I think that just about the only transferable skill I have ever picked up from football was the geography of the British Isles. As a kid I had a huge wall chart that showed all of the badges and nicknames of the senior football clubs. I would stare at it for hours and, unwittingly, learn where exotic places like Grimsby and Oldham were. For a young man marooned in Horton Cum Studley, the chance of every visiting the other worldly mill towns of Rotherham and Halifax seemed unlikely.
But since then I have almost grown up and in the intervening years I have visited close to 300 football grounds. I still haven’t been to Old Trafford or Anfield but I have been to every other football ground you can think of and I love the excitement of arriving at a new ground, sampling the local delicacy (usually a Pukka Balti Pie) and admiring the unique architecture and ambience.
The knock on effect is that I know how to get to each major conurbation, have intimate knowledge of Britain's Services (Tebay is the greatest) and can recall how to get to the ground as soon as we get close. (“Accrington? Go over the first big junction, turn right by the funeral parlour and park by the chippy just past the ground”.”Forest Green? Through the golf course, down the hill, up the mountain”)
It’s useful to know that Bristol is exactly 100 miles from my house. I can cheer up the whole car by turning left there on to the M5 and making them all look out for the wicker man and straw camel by the enormous Morrisons. I know exactly where the Little Chef that’s now an Adult Superstore is - I’m not going to tell you but ask Darrell Fisher. He knows!
Earlier this week I chuckled when I saw that Braintree were at Truro in the National League Cup on Tuesday night. 26 fans travelled with The Iron to see them lose on penalties. I was talking to a mate of mine at Mansfield. They were at Plymouth on the same night and, because of road closures, got home at 4am I could have told them that before they set off.
My accrued knowledge of British roads and locations helps when planning holidays or visits and is apparently hereditary. My son who works in logistics amazes people in his office when he says that a lorry to Ipswich will be about two and a half hours, without looking at google maps.
So thank you football. You have given me knowledge, and therefore power.
Perhaps the National League would like to have a chat because I’ll tell them something that all the South Shields fans know today. Oxford is definitely not in the north…
