THE GAFFER

Ross Jenkins

AAfter a disappointing result on Saturday we get the chance to put a few things right pretty much immediately as we welcome AFC Telford this evening. They are a good side but we have done our homework and we will be ready, using what happened on Saturday as a little extra motivation.

I watched that game back as soon as I could and we were on the back foot far too early. We have talked a lot about using home advantage and taking the game to the opposition: generally this season we have done that as our home record shows. But for some reason this time we didn’t start playing until we had been let off the hook when they missed a penalty inside the first five minutes.

We got going after that  and were well in the game throughout despite going behind before the break. We saw a lot of the ball in the second half and chased the game but needed to be that little bit braver around the penalty area.  In the end we switched off again, conceded a second, and the hard work we had put in  away at Leamington and Worksop was undone. I didn’t think we were lacking in effort at all. I think everyone put in a shift, but we  lost concentration in the key moments and against a very well drilled defence we just didn’t create enough chances.

We talked it through for a long time after the game and the one thing that we need tonight is a positive reaction; in the dressing room, in the dug out and on the pitch.

There simply isn’t time to feel sorry for ourselves. Instead we need to stick together and fight for everything. Nobody should avoid looking at the league table: I’d rather it was pinned up on the door  as motivation. We still have quarter of a season left, we still have quality players, but we need to start winning games and it has to happen sooner rather than later. A win tonight makes it seven points  from four games and that’s a decent way to start a run that pulls us towards safety.

Play your part as well tonight. Get behind us, make some noise, and let’s get back to winning ways, together.

A Bluffer's Guide to

AFC Telford United

 When were they formed?
Good question! The first club was formed in 1872 but they only became Telford United in 1969 but in 2003-4 were experiencing severe financial difficulties towards the end of the season and were forced into administration. The club's supporters rallied and raised around £50,000 in two months, but Telford United were forced into liquidation... On the same day that the proposed liquidation was announced the Supporters' trust, Telford United Supporters Ltd, created and became the sole owners of a new football club, AFC Telford United.

Where do they play?
They play their home games at the New Bucks Head, built in 2000, replacing the Bucks Head ground which had been home to Wellington Town and later Telford United for over a century. The stadium, which could originally hold up to 6,300 supporters was completed in 2003 and was the 111th largest football ground in England.

When were the Glory Years?
Well they won two promotions in three years from 2005 onwards and reached the Conference in 2011 and then again in 2014  as Conference North champions, but they were famous cup fighters many years before that so it depends which version of the club you mean, really.

What’s their claim to fame?
During the 80s Telford United became the most feared of FA Cup giant-killers, drawing with or beating no less than 15 league clubs as they repeatedly upset the form books and proved that the gap between league and non-league was small.  The teams assembled by manager Stan Storton were based on bright attacking play – they scored  3 against Stockport, Northampton, Darlington and Burnley and 4 on both Preston and Rochdale's home turf.

What’s Telford famous for?
A major Shropshire landmark, also now part of Telford, is The Iron Bridge, located in Ironbridge. It was the first bridge of its size in the world made out of cast iron.  Comedian Stewart Lee is from Telford as are bands T’Pau and ‘You’re Gorgeous’ one hit wonders Babybird.

Cult hero?
Sean Parrish not only played 90 times for the original club between 1992-94, he then returned later in his career for a second spell, playing a further 79 times, captaining the side  and scoring the winner in the play-off final against Kendal. In between those two spells he spent ten years playing in the Football League for Doncaster, Northampton, Chesterfield and at Kidderminster.

Tell me something to impress my mates
Easy. From  1976-79 the original Telford had World Cup hat-trick hero Sir Geoff Hurst taking the reins. The former West Ham striker had spent time in the States with Seattle Sounders and returned to this country looking for his first managerial appointment. He found it at Telford and enjoyed the role, staying for three years and combining it with coaching the England national side under Ron Greenwood. In 1979 he left to manage Chelsea. Obviously.

Max Makes His Mark

There was a new face in goal on Saturday when Max Metcalfe became City's fifth goalkeeper of the season, making his debut on loan from Sky Bet League One side Stockport County.

Standing at a towering 6ft 6in, Metcalfe is no stranger to National League football after spending time on loan with Spennymoor Town, AFC Fylde and most recently last Saturday's opponents  Marine.

After the re-call of Jonny Maxted by parent club Brackley Town due to injury in their goalkeeping department, Ross Jenkins  moved swiftly to acquire Metcalfe’s services as we head into the business end of the season.

Max told us “I’m buzzing (to sign). I found out on the Monday there was potential to come here and I was desperate to get it sorted and start to kick on. Coming into training  you can see the quality the lads have, and I don’t see any reason why we can’t get out of the position we’re in.”

Ross told us: “I’m thrilled to get Max in. We had a quick turn around but Max has shown great enthusiasm and professionalism so far which is something we definitely like. I’m looking forward to working with him moving forward.”

Born in Edinburgh, Max comes from a sporting family with father Richard representing Scotland internationally in Rugby Union.  The giant shot stopper came through the academy at Middlesbrough, joining as an U15 and going on to feature regularly for their U23s side, penning his first professional contract with the Teesside club in 2021.

He spent time on loan in the National League North and National League with Spennymoor Town and AFC Fylde. He kept four clean sheets in nine appearances during his two-month loan at Spennymoor Town in the North, and featured for AFC Fylde in the National League in 2023/24, appearing at The MGroup Stadium against City in the process.

A strong start to his career saw him attend several England training camps before representing Scotland internationally at youth level. His ability didn’t go unnoticed either, as he soon left the Riverside Stadium to join his current parent club Stockport County.

He told us “I’ve had a couple of loans already and  I just wanted to get as many games in as I possibly can, especially with being fairly young as a goalkeeper, So this season I was just desperate to get out on loan. The lads have been great and it's been really good. I spoke to the gaffer for a little bit before I signed and then on the first day and everything seems good.

“From the outside looking in, you know, you look at the league table and we're in we're in a relegation scrap, but when I came in and trained you could see the ability the team have. There should be no reason why we can't get out of this position and push on. Fingers crossed we can sort it all out.

"I was at Marine last season and it's weird how football works, isn't it? It was nice to see some familiar faces on Saturday who I've played with, but the result went against us and now we have to respond tonight

"I'm a big presence hopefully, and I like to think I can come and  take crosses and help out when needed.  I'm comfortable on the ball and even in  training I can see that that's sort of the way that we want to play. If we can play out, then  let's start doing it.

"What's so good about the end of the season is you have to fight to survive, and we'll be fighting to get that win tonight".

Comms4U Keep City Connected

Oxford City FC would like to thank our friends at Comms4U for making sure that the whole club is fully connected.

Comms4U provide quality cabling solutions  from a simple data socket to a full convergent technology system and this week completed installation of a system that allows powerful wifi connection to the Velocity Suite, which will make a huge difference to the lives of our hospitality guests but also the students who are on site at the MGroup Stadium every day.

Chris Williams, Head of Partnerships at the MGroup Stadium explains

In this day and age learners need fast reliable connections and Comms 4U have once again worked tirelessly and with fantastic communication to bring us a system that will help not only those scholars but also all of our guests  at events and in hospitality in the new building during the week and on matchdays

There has been huge interest in using the Velocity Suite for meetings and conferences, our co-working area is very popular and having already connected up the clubhouse, offices and press area Comms4U have been outstanding in helping make sure we are fully connected across a site that simply never sleeps.”

Adrian Dix, Sales Manager of Comms4U told us

“It’s been a pleasure to help.  It’s a club with plenty of character and incredible links to the local community and it’s good to see the impact that strong connections will have for guests and students. We’ve got to know everyone behind the scenes this season and this is just another way in which we are building a true partnership that works for all of us”.

OFF THE BALL

CHRIS WILLIAMS

It’s been a pleasure to help out at the Oxford City Women games this season and I’m very proud of the progress they continue to make. I generally write the match reports for them but at the last home game I had an extra duty when the ever-helpful Alex Cawley had to go for a wee just as half time approached and he asked me to look after the scoreboard.

It’s bizarre, I've done every job you can think of in football but I HATE doing scoreboards and, of course, I mucked it up this time, wandering off tosort out images for the website during the break and forgetting to stop the clock. Thanks to all three people who pointed out my error. Very kind.

Why do I hate it? Well let me tell you.

When Oxford United first moved to the Kassam Stadium they decided not to bother with a scoreboard. Assorted versions at their Manaor Ground home hadn’t worked so who was bothered? After half a season the Commercial Manager, Gary Hooper, told me he had a sponsor for an electronic board at the fence end at the Kassam Stadium, to be sponsored by BET 365. I liked Gary. Later in life when I was working for Port Vale we met in the restaurant at IKEA MK and he showed me samples of a 3G pitch. Two shoppers asked him which aisle the astroturf was on, and he sold the third one his sample piece!

Anyway, he ordered the scoreboard and when it arrived we had a bit of a ‘Stonehenge/Spinal Tap’ moment when we unwrapped it and it looked like something to hang above the meat counter at ASDA. You could do two lines of text on it. No images, not even a club badge. The software ran on Windows 95 on a laptop from 1895. I can’t remember why but the switch was in the stewards room and they were always leaning on it and turning it off midmatch.

My job was easy, in theory. Put the teams on, a line each, add a zero then update it as the goals went in. I would co-ordinate with PA Announcer Nathan Cooper so he could announce the scorer as I changed the board. Lovely.

Except that the laptop was in the soundproof PA Booth and we both sat in the press seats in front - it’s surprisingly difficult to report on a game if you can’t hear the crowd. So whenever there was a goal I’d write about it while Nathan commentated on the incident on BBC Oxford, then we would race across the stand, up three steps, through two fire doors and THEN do the stadium announcement and scoreboard.

I lost count of the number of times one of us stumbled or the amount of times we’d forget until the fans around us would hiss ‘SCOREBOARD’ and our unsightly mad race would start once more.  Once, we dashed in after a goal from Chris Willmott and Nathan, looking at as I burst through the door announced ‘United’s first goal scored by Chris Williams.”

In the end Nathan got a wireless mic and I got Darrell Fisher to do the scoreboard. I vowed never to touch a scoreboard again. If you see me in the PA Box tonight be scared. Anything could happen.
