THE GAFFER
Ross Jenkins
Welcome back everyone as we come in to the final straight of the season and begin a little run where we have three of the next four league games here at the MGroup Stadium. We have to make sure we transfer our excellent away form into points at home, starting today.
That away form was in evidence last week at Southport where we made it three wins and two draws from our last five away matches. We got off to the perfect start when DJ Sturridge put us ahead inside three minutes and then we defended well when needed and were a little bit frustrated to come in at the break at 1-1.
We talked about sticking to the game plan and regaining the initiative so it was really pleasing to go back out and, again, be in front inside three minutes. We then defended that lead really well before adding a third goal through Callum McFarlane. Even at 3-1 we kept doing the basics really well and kept our concentration to make sure that Southport couldn’t find a way back into the game. I thought our professionalism and know-how really shone through in the closing stages and we were full value for an important three points.
Those points kept us moving in the right direction in a really tight league table. You could drive yourself mad looking at all the permutations so let’s just say there will be plenty of twists and turns and more than ever it’s important to stay on an even keel: don’t get carried away with the win last week, don’t get ahead of yourself, just get back in, work hard, and don’t waste energy looking at what might happen elsewhere.
Callum’s goal last weekend was almost his last kick for us before he was recalled by Solihull. We thank him for his efforts and wish him well but at the same time we have strengthened our attacking options over the last few weeks with Matty Taylor and Ashley Hemmings adding their experience, Zac McEachran, DJ Sturridge and Ewan Clark back in the squad and Alfie Potter close to a return. Isaac Westendorf has also worked hard and got himself well ahead of schedule, although we will monitor that closely, so we are getting competition for places all over the pitch at just the right time.
Finally, as ever, a thank you to the fans who travelled last weekend. Your support is incredible, home and away. Let’s make that count today.

A Bluffer's Guide to Chorley
What is Chorley famous for?
Cotton and cake. Chorley, like most Lancashire towns, gained its wealth from the Industrial Revolution of the 19th century which was also responsible for the town's growth. Chorley was a vital cotton town with many mills littering the skyline up to the late 20th century. And Chorley cakes are flattened, fruit-filled pastry cakes, commonly eaten with a light spread of butter on top, and sometimes even a slice of Lancashire cheese on the side. It also has shortcrust pastry (whereas an Eccles Cake uses flaky puff pastry.).
When was the club formed?
Chorley F.C. was founded in 1875 as a rugby team. In 1883 they decided to switch sports and become a football outfit instead. They won their first game against Wigan under the command of Major John Lawrence, a former military man and Wigan player.
What’s their nickname?
The Magpies
And where do they play?
Victory Park, capacity 3,550, of which 900 are seated. At a cost of £1,000, construction of Victory Park was completed in 1920 and was named to commemorate the end of the First World War. Chorley's record attendance was 15,153 v Preston North End in the FA Cup, played at Ewood Park, home of Blackburn Rovers on 6 December 1986. At Victory Park Chorley's record attendance was 9,679 in a FA Cup 4th qualifying round match against Darwen on 15 November 1932.
Any famous former players?
Mickey Walsh, former Blackpool and Everton forward, who had one of his strikes voted goal of the season by BBC’s Match of the Day went on to play for Chorley. Ex England striker Paul Mariner also started his youth career at Chorley before playing for Arsenal, Portsmouth and San Francisco Bay.
Anyone famous from Chorley?
Plenty. Some of the country's most successful track cyclists including Olympic gold medal winners Jason Queally and Sir Bradley Wiggins lived there, partly due to the proximity of the town to the Manchester Velodrome. Others include former England rugby captain Bill Beaumont, one-hit pop group Starsailor and Phoenix Nights Star Dave “Gerry the Berry’ Spikey
Any interesting club records?
Well the biggest win on record for the Magpies came in April 1946, a 14 – 1 demolition of Morecambe. Two years earlier they had a bigger win, 16 – 0 against local rivals Leyland Motors, unfortunately taking place during wartime, when the records aren’t officially noted. Peter Watson holds the record for the highest number of goals scored in a single season with 71 (57 league goals) in the 1960–61 season. He also holds the highest aggregate goalscorer record of 372 (287 league, 85 cup) between September 1958 and February 1966.

Hemmings Off The Mark
AThere’s been a new face in the attack over the last few weeks with Ashley Hemmings adding his experience after arriving on loan from Dagenham and Redbridge.
A scorer of over 100 goals in his career, Ashley began his footballing journey at Wolverhampton Wanderers, joining their academy at nine. He signed his first professional contract in February 2009 at 17 and soon went on loan to Cheltenham Town, where he made his senior debut.
He featured briefly for Wolves’ first team at the end of the 2008–09 season and signed a new two-year deal. To continue gaining experience, Hemmings had loan spells at Torquay United and Plymouth Argyle, scoring goals and providing assists before joining Walsall in League One.
He made an immediate impact, scoring in the League Cup on his debut before joining Burton Albion on loan. He then moved on to Dagenham & Redbridge, Mansfield Town, Boston United and then Kidderminster Harriers in October 2019. He went on to spend 6 seasons at Aggborough where he became a cult hero
Last season, he enjoyed his most productive spell, scoring 30 goals as Harriers just missed out on the league title. A season which earned him both the National League North golden boot and player of the season awards. He moved back to Dagenham & Redbridge during the summer, before briefly re-joining Kidderminster Harriers on loan last month.
Ashley has made the move to the MGroup seamlessly and as he told us this week, feels very much at home at The Hoops
“I’ve found it really good from the first day” the likeable 35-year-old told us . “It’s a positive place to be and the boys made me feel welcome straight away. Obviously I’d spoken to the Gaffer before I came and he told me what he wanted for me but you always wonder what it’s like when you join a club so it was good to get here, meet everyone and feel part of it straight away.
How did that first chat with Ross go, by the way?
“Really good. We spoke especially about how I play and how I’d fit in. I like to get on the ball, get goals, assists and I like to be creative. I feel like I’ve done that in every game so far, and I’m enjoying my football.
Even so, that first goal at Curzon was still important…
“ Yeah, 100% Any forward knows that the first goal takes that weight off your shoulders. But it’s not just about goals. I’m just here to help the boys out, you know. I see myself as a senior player, and I just want to give them as much help as possible. We’re going into this little period of games now and we’re starting to ut a few results together at the right time,”
“We know the situation, but what I see in training, what I've seen on game days, the boys just need to believe in themselves. We’ve got great players here. We want to play football, get the ball down, so let’s be positive and show what we have done in the last couple games now.
Are you one of these people that will study league tables and go ‘oh, they're playing them, that side is playing that, one team has games in hand…’ Do you study that?
“Not really. I like to just control what I can.. I know it’s a cliche but we just have to take it game-by-game as a collective. It's just what about we do as a group now, it's not about what others do. We just concentrate on what we're doing, what the gaffer is telling us, and what we do throughout the week until match day”.
City have two home games in a row including next Saturday when we welcome Kidderminster Harriers - a club that Ashley has strong connections with.
“I’m looking forward to that. Everyone knows how much Kidderminster mean to me, but like I said, it's a game of football. I'm here now at Oxford and obviously I want to win with Oxford. This week and next we have two home games and two wins would really put us in a strong position. We’ve had a good week of training this week so now we do like I said, take it Saturday to Saturday.
“First we look to get the 3 points against Chorley. And then once that's done, it'll be on to the next one and we'll be figuring out how we beat Kidderminster . I've got confidence in the boys that we can go and do that”.
City Support Local Charities with
'Brand The Bus'
There are just two weeks left for local good causes and charities in Oxfordshire to enter a popular competition with a prize package worth £100,000.
Nominations for the Brand the Bus competition, run by Oxford Bus Company and Thames Travel, will close on 31st March.
The bus companies have already received more than 20 entrants since nominations opened on 2nd March, and good causes in the county are being encouraged to enter before the deadline to be in with a chance of winning the bumper prize.
Nominations can be completed via a short online form, with the competition process then moving swiftly into a public voting period between 1st and 30th April.
With the support of partners Get Radio and Oxford City Football Club, Brand the Bus will again deliver a £100,000 prize package for the winner.
This includes a year-long full-wrap advertisement on an electric double-decker bus, free advertising on board Oxford Bus Company and Thames Travel vehicles, radio advertising on Get Radio, and being named Oxford City’s charity of choice for the 2026/27 season.
Hamish Law, Commercial Director at Get Radio, said: “We’re delighted to be supporting Brand the Bus again this year, giving even more Oxfordshire charities the opportunity to win a truly game-changing level of exposure across the county.
“Brand the Bus 2025 was a tremendous success, and we’re excited to build on that this year with our fantastic partners at Oxford Bus Company, Thames Travel and Oxford City Football Club.”
Chris Williams, Head of Partnerships at Oxford City FC, said: “Oxford City FC are proud to be invited to be part of Brand the Bus once more. So many charities do such incredible work across the Oxfordshire community, and this is a fantastic way to help spread the word all around the county.
“We have built a strong partnership with last year’s winners, One-Eighty, and we look forward to doing so again with this year’s successful charity.”
Once the voting period is completed at the end of April, the top 10 charities and good causes will be reviewed by a panel of experts, and a winner will be selected.
The winning organisation will be invited to work with Oxford Bus Company on the design, with the branded bus expected to launch in the autumn.
In addition to the winning prize package, there will be a runner-up package worth £5,000, which includes on-bus digital advertising.
Prizes will be awarded to entries who have, in the panel’s opinion, fulfilled the brief to the highest standard.
Last year saw children’s mental health charity One-Eighty chosen as the winner, while Helen & Douglas House, the world’s first children’s hospice, became the competition’s first ever runner-up.
Previous winners of the Brand the Bus competition include Girlguiding Oxfordshire, Home-Start Oxfordshire, Blue Skye Thinking, Restore, SeeSaw and Oxford Hospitals Charity.

OXFORD CITY WOMEN
Two goals from Yasmin Edwards helped Oxford City Women pick up a point with a 2-2 draw at home to Southampton last Sunday.
The young forward made it 14 for the season as City celebrated Mother’s Day with a fine display, particularly in a very entertaining first half.
City fell behind after just nine minutes but Ellie White’s effort bounced back off the bar as they pushed for an equaliser. That came after 20 minutes when Edwards broke through the Saint’ backline and curled a clever finish home to make it 1-1.
Three minutes later it was 2-1 as another good finish from Edwards put the Hoops ahead. However, a Southampton goal made it 2-2 just before the break and both sides tightened up defensively after the interval to ensure that both sides had to settle for a point in a very hard-fought 90 minutes.

OFF THE BALL
CHRIS WILLIAMS
I am starting to think I’ve left it too late to achieve my lifelong dream and become a professional footballer. I turned 60 the other week and although I can still ping the ball around I fear my lack of mobility would make it hard to impress at a trial. With that in mind I am passing the baton on to my Grandson who has recently taken his first toddling steps in the beautiful game.
City Tots runs from 8.45am every Saturday morning - it’s back after a winter break- and allows kids from 18 months upwards to come along and play football. Thus, at 8.30am, I am here at the MGroup Stadium and delighted to hear a little voice says “Hello Pops” as Harrison races across for a hug that fills my cynical old heart with pure joy. Born three months early, he’s now a bouncing two-year-old who I dote on, and he holds my hand as we make or way through to the community pitch where coach Andy Francis is setting out cones.
I set down Harrison and soon the cones are flying in all directions. Andy smiles patiently as though he has this to deal with every Saturday morning. Other tiny terrors start to arrive. Some have kit, some are dressed for warmth; it’s very informal and whether they throw themselves into things straight away or hide nervously behind the legs of their parents, each child is welcomed and made to feel at home.
There’s a nice buzz around the place. Andy Gate, National League North Ticketing Manager of the year 2024/25, chases after daughter Violet who is a bundle of energy. Eddie Odhiambo turns up with son Benji and his nephew: both boys are the sons of professional footballers but that’s not what this is all about. Nobody here is talent spotting. All we are doing is having enormous fun in the fresh air.
That starts with a game of stacking cones on footballs. Then there is a spot of fun with hoops, then some casual kicking. All of this is chaos with a constant soundtrack of shrieks and laughter, and that’s just the parents. I bump (literally) into an old friend, Rachel, who is sporting a pot on a broken ankle from playing the game. It doesn’t stop her hobbling around and trying to keep up with her daughter.
At the end the kids are bribed with a sticker if they fetch the cones and balls back. It works like a dream and they all say thank you and merrily wave bye bye after 45 joyous minutes. I cannot recommend these sessions enough.
And as a footnote, to show what sort of club we are, on the Monday I come in to work and find a little bag of City Tots kit on my desk with a sticker saying ‘Harrison, X’ . I won’t embarrass the person who did that (Thanks Louise) but one tiny gesture of kindness can make a world of difference. What a wonderful football club this is
Little steps, but always in the right direction…
