THE GAFFER
Ross Jenkins
Good afternoon everyone and thanks for coming along to see us take on one of the best sides in the division, Kidderminster Harriers. The game at Aggborough earlier in the season was an entertaining one that ended in a 1-1 draw and with a big crowd expected today it should be another great occasion.
We come into it in our best form of the season and on the back of a very good win over Chorley here last Saturday. I didn’t think we were quite at our best in the first half but we got better as the game went on. Ewan Clark’s back post header got us in front and then DJ Sturridge’s excellent touch and finish put us two goals ahead and we never looked back after that.
I was delighted with the win but just as pleased with the way we went about our business at 2-0. We continued to work hard, we were hard to break down but still created chances and there was a real determination not to let Chorley back into the game. They get the ball into the box quickly but we coped well with that and the defence deserved their clean sheet.
One defeat in six games is a great reward for all that hard work and the players deserve huge credit for their efforts, but ease up now and there is still plenty of danger all around us. Think of it like a long distance race with the pack approaching the final straight. Ease up, let the pace slow, and others will take full advantage. Just stay in your lane, focus on what you have to do and put every ounce of energy you have into those closing stages.
Finally, a quick word for the fans. I thought the atmosphere last Saturday was exceptional and the fans lifted us when we needed it most. It makes such a difference so get behind us again today, stay positive and let’s keep moving in the right direction together.

A Bluffer's Guide to Kidderminster Harriers
Why is Kidderminster famous?
Carpets. The modern carpet industry was founded in the area in 1785 by Brintons, and the carpet industry became so important to the local economy that the local newspaper is still named The Shuttle after the shuttles used on the carpet looms. By 1951 there were over thirty carpet manufacturers in the town, although many were lost in the Great Laminate Wars of the late 20th Century. The red carpet used for the Royal Wedding of Prince William and Katherine was manufactured in Kidderminster.
Why are they the Harriers?
It is a legacy from their formation in 1886 when a highly successful athletics club and the local rugby club, Clarence, became ‘Kidderminster Harriers and Football Club'. They had rivals in Kidderminster Olympic - local derbies drew crowds of over 7,000. In 1890 the two clubs amalgamated as Kidderminster FC, turning professional and joining the Midland League
We all love Aggborough. When did they move there?
Having originally played at the local cricket ground Harriers moved to their current home in 1887–88
Any early superstars?
Billy Boswell – he scored an amazing 64 goals in 1935–36, a new scoring record for the club. In 1963 Peter Wassall joined the Harriers on the advice of his brother Brendan after spells with Wolves, Aston Villa and Atherstone Utd. After a season in midfield he switched to play up front and went on to score a total of 448 goals in 621 games for the Harriers. He joined Hereford Utd briefly in 1971 but returned to Aggborough a year later.
In July 1985 Kim Casey joined from Gloucester City for £2,500. In his first season for the Harriers Casey scored 73 goals in 69 games, a club record, and netted 47 the following season. For much of the eighties and nineties Casey partnered Paul Davies up front, Davies eventually logging 307 career goals in 656 games over 13 years for the club, while Casey hit nearly 200 goals in six seasons.
Any cup success?
In 1987 Harriers went to Wembley Stadium for the FA Trophy final against Burton Albion. The game was a 0–0 draw after extra time, but Kidderminster won 2–1 in the replay at The Hawthorns. They have reached the final on three occasions since, losing 2–1 to Wycombe Wanderers in 1991 before a then competition record crowd of 34,842, 2–1 to Woking in 1995. In 2007 Harriers went to the new Wembley for their third final. They however lost 3–2 to Stevenage Borough in front of 53,262. 2-0 up at half time thanks to two James Constable goals. Stevenage came back and scored the winner in the 88th minute in the first competitive match to be held at the new Wembley.
LAST TIME WE MET
City Welcome Match Sponsors TotalQ
Oxford City are delighted to welcome TotalQ as our match sponsors this afternoon.
TotalQ have played a big part at City this season, sponsoring the Main Stand and new signing Ashley Hemmings as well as kindly donating another player sponsorship to local charity Response.
Managing Director Martin Spackman told us
“It’s been a pleasure to get involved with the club this season. I’ve been made to feel part of everything extremely quickly and hopefully the team’s good form continues on Saturday against Kidderminster.”
Oxford City’s Head of Partnerships Chris Williams said
“We are really grateful to Martin and TotalQ, not just for sponsoring Saturday but for their backing and friendship throughout the season. Martin has been a big supporter of football in Oxford all of his life and was keen to give something back to his local community. It’s a partnership we all hope continues to grow and we look forward to seeing him and his group on Saturday.”
TotalQ provide specialised services in quality management, alongside offering temporary staff support for seamless operational execution. They also provide cost and process saving support for all industries utilising years of automotive best practice.
Aaron Loving Life With The Hoops
Aaron Harper-Bailey has made a big impression since arriving in a Hoops shirt. The imposing centre-half has quickly become a fans’ favourite with his passion for the game shining through. But he's a realist and knows that City can't relax despite a couple of good wins.
"We have to use that win last week and take it into the next game” he told us as the players prepared to face Kidderminster, “It’s a massive game, but I think they all will be from now on in. But we come into this last bunch of games full of confidence and we’re looking forward to Saturday".
A clean sheet against Chorley kept City moving in the right direction. As a defender, does Aaron take as much pleasure from a clean sheet as picking up three points?
“I do take a lot of pride in keeping a clean sheet” he says with a smile. “I'm always happy to get a good win but we all put a lot of effort into it and the whole team cam be just as happy with a clean sheet
“It’s not just the defenders who achieve that though, it’s everybody else. Let the forwards have the glory after a win though, you know!”
Competition for those places in defence is red hot, which seems to be driving everyone forward at the moment.
”Yes, we are all pushing each other. Darnell and I played last week and we get on great but I like playing with Charlie as well and whoever plays we all have that same determination to help each other, help the team. We have all clicked well".
From the sidelines it looks like you're a natural communicator?
”Not true actually. I think I was always the quiet one, so I think it’s something I had to bring into my game growing up and I’ve had to work on that side of the game. You learn as a kid that the senior players are talking all the time and helping those around them so you want to be doing that too. The more voices there are the more they bring that extra little bit to the team".
Whoever plays in defence, they have a big presence right behind them in giant keeper Max Metcalfe…
“He’s a giant! I’m six foot four and he makes me look small. But I think that brings a lot of confidence too, especially at corner kicks.. He clears everyone out of his way when he needs to, doesn’t he! It gives you confidence knowing that we have him right behind us."
Facing Harriers today will be a game with plenty of connections, and is certainly one that Aaron is looking forward to.
”I was at Kidderminster earlier in my career and ironically, my first game was against Oxford. I think fans today will remember that as ‘the comeback game’ and have very different memories of it! I came on as a sub and then we won 3-2 from 2-0 down.
“It's a good club, Kidderminster, and they're rightly doing well this season They're going to have their own confidence coming down here. But we're the home side and we’ll have our own fans right behind us.
”I’ve noticed the fans bringing more flags and making more noise - I think there’s a little gang of students who have started coming and it makes a big difference to hear.
”I'm enjoying it. It's been a short period and when you come in first you just find your feet. But why wouldn't you enjoy playing football? You are doing what you love, doing what you enjoy. I just love playing football so coming here and to be back playing brings me so much joy.”
News Round Up
Oxford City would like to thank the Michael and Straw families for sponsoring two players for the run in at The MGroup Stadium.
The Michael family have become another family sponsor for Matty Taylor while the Straw family were so impressed by DJ Sturridge’s superb goal last Saturday that they sponsored the forward for the rest of the season.
Head of Partnerships Chris Williams welcomed our new sponsors, saying
“Both sponsorships are actually endorsements of our matchday experience: the two families came to games, loved their day and wanted to be involved with the club. A player sponsorship is a great way to get involved and feel part of what we are growing as a club and we look forward to seeing both families here to watch those players again very soon.”

OXFORD CITY WOMEN
Oxford City Women stormed into the semi-finals of the Chairman’s Cup with a 3-1 win at Woodley on Sunday.
The goals came from familiar sources with Yasmin Edwards scoring twice and Ellie White adding the third as the pair continue to battle for the golden boot.
Edwards’ opener came early in the game when she turned a defender and finished powerfully from the edge of the area for a well-taken goal to make it 1-0 but the home side rallied and pounced on a 37th minute error to make it 1-1 at the break.
City had created plenty of chances and continued to do so after the interval after Edwards gave them the perfect start with a goal after just 20 seconds, chipping the keeper after an incisive pass from Anna O’Leary to make it 2-1.
Again, City pressed and dominated the second half but it wasn’t until White slotted home after good work from midfielder Sophie Lester that the game was safe.
City now go on to face Sholing away in the semi-final on 12th April. The home game against Beaconsfield will now be rescheduled and played on 24th May.

OFF THE BALL
CHRIS WILLIAMS
It was the Hoops Foundation Golf Day on Thursday and I didn’t play because I am an absolute liability on anything like that. Let me tell you all about it.
Many years ago my father, Brian, set up his own Golf Day, The Brian Williams Golf Day. I came up with the name. Never a brilliant businessman, his ace plan was to invite everyone who ever gave him work, dazzle them with his golf skills, and then get them drunk and use a Jedi mind trick to persuade them that he was the Quantity Surveyor they were looking for.
So there we all stood, gathered around the first tee as my father strode through the expectant crowd ready to tee off the day. He swished his mighty driver in impressive fashion and addressed the ball. At which point one of his mates accidentally put their foot on the accelerator on their buggy. It shot forward and mowed my stricken father down, snapping his achilles in the process. It rather put a dampener on the day, to be honest.
My dad walked with a limp for the rest of his life and I spent that day taking him to hospital.
Another time, when on an Oxford United pre-season tour in Boston, USA, the tour costs had been offset by Seacoast United who had recouped some of that expense by selling places for people to play with Soccer Stars From The UK: us! I was due to go along and film it all but on the day people started dropping out and somehow I got talked in to playing. People were paying to play with a celebrity. They were quite surprised when I turned up. So was I.
The incredible Mickey Lewis spotted a chance to liven up the day. “Nobody tees off unless they have drunk a bottle of Bud on each hole” he declared. The paying Americans laughed politely. They weren't laughing when Mickey and Andy Melville tottered into the club house two hours after the scheduled finish. They had left their playing partners in the rough somewhere along the way after strictly enforcing the Lewis Budweiser Rule.
But in the meantime, on an eventful day out, I nearly died. You know the moment on the tee where someone is down the fairway and you say “they are miles away. I’ll never reach them. I’m going to hit it.” Well this one time, I smacked the ball hard and true and it flew. In the semi distance I watched Manager Chris Wilder hop in the air as the ball skimmed past his shin. “Oooh” I said. “Oops. Hope he saw the funny side of that.”
It turned out, dear readers, that Mr Wilder, did not actually think much of this breach of etiquette. As I walked down the fairway to take my next shot he sent my ball back to me, at terrifying velocity.
He matched my shot, and I was now considerably closer than he had been. I didn’t see the ball, I just heard the “FFFIZZZZ” as it flew past my left ear, missing me by about an inch. “Fore” he shouted, while rolling on the grass laughing.
Since then I have just about given up the game. I may play once a year but I am a nervous wreck on the first tee and twitching my way down the fairway if I ever hit a good drive. just in case it is returned with interest.
