THE GAFFER
Ross Jenkins
Don’t let up. That will be the simple message we give to the players as we take on Peterborough Sports this afternoon. We have picked up two excellent results in the last two games against teams I believe will be in the play-offs and now we have to show the same character and determination in every game between now and the end of the season.
In both of those games we have gone behind early on. Against Kidderminster we conceded a freak goal after eight seconds when their player chased down a back pass and got a lucky break with Max Metcalfe’s clearance cannoning into him and leading to an opening goal before a lot of fans had got to their places. You either crumble in that situation or you respond, and the players deserve enormous credit for their reaction. Nobody panicked, everyone stuck to the gameplan and in the end I think the better team won the game.
At Merthyr on Friday we once again fell behind to a poor goal, this time after just six minutes. You have to concentrate for the whole game and we clearly need to cut those lapses out but once again we bounced back and got a point through a Jack Bearne goal just after half time. We could have won it, certainly in the closing stages, but a point on the road is another very positive result and kept us edging closer to where we want to be.
It’s still incredibly tight but we have things in our own hands now. A month ago there were teams with six or seven games in hand over us but that has leveled out, There is still plenty of danger but we have dragged a couple of other teams into the mix and have hit form at exactly the right time. One or two new faces have helped and it was good to see Canice Carroll back in a City shirt on Friday. You all know what he brings to the group and it adds yet more competition to the squad.
We will need every one of those players between now and the end of the season, especially today because playing two very tough, physical matches Friday/Monday is not ideal. There will be one or two knocks and bruises, some tired legs, but that’s the same for both teams and we have to try and make home advantage count.
I thought the atmosphere here against Kidderminster was the best it has been all season and players thrive on that positivity. Stay behind us today, make plenty of noise and let’s see if we can all play a part in another memorable win this afternoon.

A Bluffer's Guide to
Peterborough Sports
Peterborough Sports was established in 1908 as Brotherhoods Engineering Works. They joined the Northants League (which later became the United Counties League) for the 1919–20 season, winning the league in their first season.
However, they left at the end of the 1922–23 season, transferring to Division Three of the Peterborough & District League, which they won in 1925–26, earning promotion to Division Two. The club was dormant in 1929–30 and 1932–33, after which they dropped into Division Three North.Despite only finishing eleventh in 1936–37, they were elevated to Division Two for the 1937–38 season. After World War II the club were placed in Division One, where they remained until finishing bottom of the table in 1948–49, resulting in relegation to Division Two. In 1952 the division was renamed Division One as the division above became the Premier Division, but the club finished bottom in 1952–53 and were relegated to the new Division Two. In 1963–64 they were relegated again to Division Three South, but returned to Division Two after a single season.
At the end of the 1973–74 season Brotherhoods Engineering Works were relegated to Division Three South for a second time, but returned to Division Two after winning the Division Three South title in 1975–76. Relegated again in 1979–80, the club returned to Division Two at the first attempt as Division Three South champions, and were promoted to Division One at the end of the 1982–83 season after finishing third. The 1987–88 season saw the club finish as Division One runners-up and earn promotion to the Premier Division. In 1999 the club changed its name to Bearings Direct, and then again in 2001 to Peterborough Sports. In 2006–07 they won the Premier Division, and in 2012–13 were promoted to Division One of the United Counties League after finishing third.
In 2015–16 Peterborough Sports were Division One champions, earning promotion to the Premier Division. They also won the League Cup, beating Holbeach United on penalties in the final, as well as the Northants Junior Cup and the Hinchingbrooke Cup. The following season saw them win the Premier Division with 112 points, earning promotion to Division One South of the Northern Premier League; they also retained the Hinchingbrooke Cup. In 2018 the club were transferred to Division One Central of the Southern League. In 2018–19 the club were Division One Central champions, earning promotion to the Premier Division Central. They finished as runners-up in 2021–22, qualifying for the promotion play-offs.
After beating Alvechurch in the semi-finals, the club defeated Coalville Town 2–0 in the final to earn promotion to the National League North.

Byron Wilson
Sometimes in football you have to stay patient. In Byron Wilson's case it has taken him until the second half of the season before he could make an impact, coming into the side and playing an integral part in the upturn in form that has helped pull The Hoops away from the foot of the table. The job is far from done, but Byron is relishing the challenge
“ I've definitely had to be patient” he told us. “I had a little stint earlier in the season, but now I've been put back in by the gaffer and it’s just been a case of working hard in training and stuff like that. Everything's worked out the way it's supposed to and hopefully I can stay in now until the end of the season, keep churning out good performances, as I feel I have been so far.
“At times as a footballer you're obviously going to be frustrated when you're not playing. There is a lot of competition for places here. I’m the youngest one looking to play right-back. George Burroughs and Jacob Roddy are older than me and sometimes the game is about mental toughness and resilience too. Sometimes you have to deal with not being in the team; you're not always going to have your own way.
“George has been there for the majority of the season and done a great job, Roddy's covered there, I've covered left back at times so there’s a lot of versatility and the competition just shows you the quality that we've got in the squad I've had to be a lot more patient than probably you'd really want to be but that’s something that's going to happen with the quality we have
“It drives you on to want to keep the shirt”.
The 20-year-old is brutally honest about having to learn quickly this season having made the jump from Academy football at Brentford to life in the National League North.
“I do feel like I’ve learned so much this season. There have been so many different experiences,. Even in training, you've got players like Isaac Westendorf; he's a strong lad, and from being in academy situations where I'm probably the strongest one on the pitch to come up against players like Isaac on a daily basis, you've got to adapt quickly! I guess you've just got to put your pride aside quite a lot and just say you're not as good as you think you are and really put in those hard hours. That's what this season's been for me really, just getting acclimatized to non-league football and now hopefully reaping the rewards of it”.
The team is now benefitting from that learning and Byron will be looking to play his part as we enter the sharp end of the season
“We are now into a real grandstand run-in” he says "but we are bang in the mix, aren't we? We're backing ourselves and it should be an exciting ending. Everyone involved at the club, we're always going to back ourselves. We've put ourselves in a good position now but yeah, it's really going to come down to the wire. All we can do is put in 110% effort as we have been all season. Hopefully we can get our reward for all that hard work and we can have a good end to the season and then kind of relax when it comes to the summer after a job well done.”
On The Road
ARDLEY
Oxford City’s youngsters marched into the final of the Oxfordshire Senior Cup on Tuesday night with a win at Ardley. Chris Williams was right there with them.
If you drew a circle with the centre in Oxford it would bisect the M40/A40 at QPR and Ardley football clubs: a world apart in football terms but both part of the learning curve for City’s young side. Tonight’s squad is made up of essentially the same players who did the club proud in progressing as far as they ever have done in the FA Youth Cup. Ardley Playing Fields is miles away from Loftus Road but tonight we learn as much from seeing the team compete against seasoned West Oxfordshire players as we did against the talented teenagers of West London
There’s a false entrance to the ground at Ardley. You park by the main road and go through a gate to pass the Village Hall (villages surely? This serves both Ardley and Fewcott). Then you cross a field to approach the single turnstile into the main ground itself. It’s a beautiful spring evening as I persuade the lad on the gate that I AM on the list and that my name is Andy Sinnott.
I’m early. I am ALWAYS early and two people presume I am a match official, guiding me into the officials' changing room. I take my clothes off, just in case I’m needed, but it turns out this is a false alarm and I am ushered towards the Board Room, tucked away in the corner of the Club House. I am soon joined by Club Secretary Lee Pankau and a plate of biscuits. I nibble on a custard cream and have a cuppa as the crowd start to arrive.
It’s a neat little ground with a sizeable slope. At the top end is the red brick clubhouse with the changing rooms, toilets and a bar upstairs. To the right there is a low stand half way down the hill while the dugouts are on the opposite side. The far end is empty, looked down upon by a row of detached houses. Ardley try to kick off at 7.30 to avoid complaints about the lights from the residents and I notice during the game that nobody is watching on from the upstairs windows. I presume they are all watching England lose to Japan on telly. I know which game I’d rather watch.
Chairman Andy Sinnott arrives, complaining loudly about having trouble getting in, so I slip away and take up a place in the middle of the stand. Lee Pankau joins me. The biscuits must have run out. Then the game kicks off and matchday mode kicks in.
The Current Mrs Williams will confirm that I sometimes have timing issues. There is no scoreboard at Ardley but the game kicks off at 7.32 so I can work out what time in the match things happen. So when left-back Aydin Ulas scores at 8.04pm I can figure that it was in the 31st minute. “What time was the goal?” texts Andy Gate, doing socials behind the goal “my stopwatch is broken”. “Five past eight” I helpfully tell him.
The goal comes with the City kids playing up the mountain so a lead at half time is invaluable. Ardley, with former City right-back Declan Benjamin up front, are tough opponents but you’d expect that. It’s a cup game not a friendly and challenges are strong but largely fair. Kauan Bitencourt De Oliveira has had a scrap all first half and that pattern continues after half time, with the biscuits replaced by a chocolate cake in the Board Room. What a night I am having.
Those challenges rise in intensity after the break as yellow cards and bruises rise by the minute. The dim lighting add to the drama. Suddenly Ardley get a corner and George Cowmeadow thumps home an equaliser. I consider saying Cowmeadow grazed the bar, but in truth it was a low drive that beat Max Treml so I have to look for an udder pun for the match report.
Surely Ardley, with the benefit of age and experience will go on and win it? But no. At 9.04 pm in the distant semi-gloom someone trips the excellent Brayden Daniel and Kauan slots home the penalty. I’ve forgotten to look at the clock so the goal is any time between 74 and 80 minutes but we agree to give it as 75 and City have 10-15 minutes to hang on.
They do it expertly. Ardley push but the young lads don’t let them near to Treml and at the final whistle it’s a memorable win and progress through to the final against either Kidlington or Carterton.
I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my evening. It’s what this competition is all about: hard matches and youngsters learning their trade. It’s not a huge, global, competition but if you are going to go in it then have a clear purpose, define what you are using it for, and see if you can win it. Well played lads, see you at the Final.
OXFORD CITY WOMEN
There was a familiar face in the dugout yesterday when Oxford City Women welcomed Winchester City Flyers to the MGroup Stadium.
Aliyah Anthony has been one of the driving forces behind the growth of women and girls’ football at Oxford City and we are delighted to announce that Aliyah has agreed to become the Manager of the Women’s First Team, working alongside Lyon Theoharous who will continue to coach the side and work with the female teams that are prospering at the club.
Aliyah told us
“It will be a proud moment for me to take charge on Sunday. Lyon has worked really hard all season with the First Team and it’s just a case of building on what we have all built here, not just with the First Team but with the whole pathway for female players.
“So many of the players have come through the Velocity programme and we have a young side with so much promise. It’s a big responsibility to be asked to lend my experience to help those players continue their development but I love a challenge and want to thank the club for having such faith in me. It’s really exciting.
“The aim is to finish the season strongly, starting with a win on Sunday.”

OFF THE BALL
CHRIS WILLIAMS
As we all know, I should be Head of FIFA. Not only do I own a blazer, I also enjoy a corporate lunch, am wide open to international holidays as a form of bribery and, perhaps crucially, I actually have ideas that would shake up the game. Yes yes yes, rules such as ‘no heading the ball for junior sides’ have come in to the game already but that’s not radical enough for me. I want big changes and I want them now.
I have already explained in an earlier programme why the idea of ‘squash ladders in cup football’ would liven up the FA Cup. In this system, if a team from a lower division beats one from higher they immediately change league places. So Macclesfield would now be in the Premier League and we would be in the same division as Crystal Palace. Think about the boost in crowds when Palace travel to Marine or Spennymoor. Think of the media interest when Macclesfield play Manchester City - they were actually in the same division not so long ago
But that is just one way I would revolutionise football. The other is a simple rule that wouldn’t even need to be official; teams could just take it up and test it out for me.
The Williams Rule of Height:
All team captains must be the tallest outfield player
Simple, right? You stand all of the team against a door frame and mark it off with a little pencil. Whoever is tallest gets to wear the armband. Maybe they have to be in socks not boots in case some shortarse with big ideas puts in extra long studs, and I’ve ruled out goalkeepers because as a rule you just can’t trust them to even call Heads or Tails without losing the coin.
The benefits are clear and obvious. They will usually demand more respect from referees who will literally look up to them, and fans will be able to identify the captain far easier than just trying to spot the armband. Why not go the whole hog and give them headbands instead. Much simpler.
But the main reason I would introduce this rule is based on pre-match. The captain leads the team out, and then the rest of the players must come out of the tunnel in height order. That is much nicer aesthetically, right? It also makes it easier when they line up before the game, a gently sloping line of ten players which peaks in the middle. Think how much simpler that is for cameramen at international games who can slowly lower the camera as they go along the line of people half-heartedly mumbling the national anthem. No massive dip as you lurch down from towering centre half to tiny left-back.
Another winning change to the game then, although I doubt that the lawmakers will ever listen. Just like my ‘all centre halves should be tied together like a three-legged race', and ‘All teams must include at least one bald-headed player’ I fear I will be pushed into the shadows, never to fulfil my full leadership potential.
