THE GAFFER

Ross Jenkins

After a season with so many twists and turns we get to the final home league game today and our fate is well and truly in our own hands. Another fantastic result at Hereford on Tuesday night has pulled us further away from the relegation places and one more positive result should be enough to guarantee we play at this level again next year. Meanwhile Chester will be desperate for a win to try and book a place in the play-offs and that should make for a wonderful game of football for you to enjoy this afternoon.

We have gone eight games unbeaten now but if there was a turning point it came slightly before that when we won at Worksop. Somehow we had reached Valentine’s Day without an away win all season but a win that day just gave everything a lift and we haven’t lost away since that day. We strengthened the squad at the same time and, once things settled and people got up to speed, results followed. We’ve won the last three home matches, including a big one against Peterborough last time we played here, then a draw at Alfreton and that win on Tuesday have given us breathing space. That’s all it is though: there is still plenty of football to play before the job is done.

Whatever happens today, the same intensity will continue right through to the last game, away at Darlington next Saturday, and then we press on and make sure that we are ready to face next season fully prepared. The aim has to be to compete at the top of the table - we’ll wait and see if that’s in the North or South as I think that’s going to be an interesting call once all the other leagues are decided. Whichever it is, we have learned so much from this season and will be better for the experience.

I want to take the opportunity to thank all of the staff and players for their hard work throughout the season. I can honestly say that this group of people stuck together and spirits never dropped, even when results weren’t going our way. It has been a pleasure to come in to work each day and my thanks also go to the Board and all of the backroom staff who make this club such an amazing place.

And of course my biggest thanks go to the fans. You have been incredible all season, both home and away. Some of you have been there for every one of the 6,000 miles we have travelled on the road and that support means so much to us all. Thank you on behalf of all of the staff and players.

Hopefully we get to have a drink with you after the game and have got the job done. But until then we still have work to do…

A Bluffer's Guide to
Chester

What is Chester like?
Chester is a former Roman town, right on the Welsh border and about  340,000 people live there. It was strategically important in Norman and Medieval times and  then grew during the Industrial Revolution.

Tell us a fact to impress my mates with…
James Bond was born in Chester. Actor Daniel Craig was born on Liverpool Road on 2nd March 1968. And if they aren’t impressed by that one then Michael Owen’s dad, Terry, used to play for Chester.

When did the club come into existence?
Chester is one of the newest clubs around, having only been founded in 2010, although their predecessors Chester City started in  1885. The new club started life in the Northern Premier League Division One North and were successive league champions of the NPL Division One North (2010–11), the NPL Premier Division (2011–12), and the Conference North (2012–13).

How about the previous club?
The club actually started as plain Chester in 1885, joining the Football League before the 1931–32 season. They didn’t change their name to Chester City until 1983. They dropped into the Conference in 2000 but were champions in 2004 and back in the Football League until the problematic 2008/9 season. Chester City were finally wound up on 10 March 2010.

Who formed the new club?
With the financial problems at the club mounting up City Fans United (CFU) had been formed in October 2009. The group had already begun preparations in February 2010 to form a "phoenix club" and when City were wound up  over 1,000 people participated in the ballot to name the new club simple  Chester FC. With the support of Cheshire West and Chester Council, the club were able to play their games at their previous home, the Deva Stadium.

What colours do they wear?
For continuity the club play in the same colours as the former club did: blue and white stripes

Where do they play?
The Deva Stadium, although it is formally the Exacta Stadium due to a sponsorship deal. The ground holds  5,376 with 4,170 seated;

Historically, what have been Chester’s high points?
Over the years the club(s) were champions of the Conference in 2004, winners of the Welsh Cup, League Cup semi-finalists (beating Leeds and Newcastle along the way) and one of only two clubs to win the Debenhams Cup. No, it’s not a competition that really caught on!

Notable former players?
Ian Rush, Lee Dixon, cult hero Grenville Millington, Cyrille Regis, and Roberto Martinez have all played their football in Chester.

City Welcome Match Sponsors Wave Staffing

Oxford City are pleased to welcome Wave Staffing as our Match Sponsors today.

Wave Staffing are Oxfordshire and the Cotswold's leading event staffing company, providing events staff and services for events since 2010 including educational establishments, corporate, luxury brand promotions, wedding staff and private events.

Chris Jones of Wave Staffing told us

“We’re really looking forward to our day. Its been a pleasure to support the club this season and hopefully we can bring them luck and another big win on Saturday. We’ve seen first hand how the hospitality area has grown in the new building this season and we have certainly been made to feel part of the Oxford City family, something we hope will grow for many seasons to come.”

Chris Williams, City’s Head of Partnerships added

”Wave Staffing have been excellent all season and I want to thank Chris in particular: working in hospitality as his day job often means  he often watches the game in other areas and it’s always a pleasure to bump into him, wherever he chooses to watch the game!

“Whether its comparing notes on the game or exploring ways  we can work together, it’s always great to see him and I hope he and his team have a great day with us on Saturday.”

Wave Staffing provide high quality services, not just at large scale events and festivals, but also at weddings, private dinners, parties, and conferences. There’s no event too big or too small; they just want to help make them the best events they can be.

DJ Rocking

City close out their home season this afternoon with DJ Sturridge looking to add to his tally and end the season as top scorer.

The 24-year-old forward has netted 10 times this season and is looking to end the season with another today against Chester, if he can…

“It would be nice to end up top goalscorer” he admits as we chat ahead of training this week “but  there's still games to go, so you never know; other  people might get among the goals and overtake me. If that happens and we end the season with another couple of wins then I’d take that all day long.

“A few of the  goals have been decent. The one against Kiddy was good. the Chorley one was nice. They all count!"

Having missed the last couple of games DJ is hoping to be back to play a part as City look to end and relegation doubts this afternoon.

“It ’s a big game , second last game of the season, and we know that  three points will get us safe.  We’ve been playing well and picking up points but the job’s not done until we are mathematically safe so we’ll keep pushing in every game from now until the end of the season. We put it back in our own hands and if we can  get maximum points our remaining games that gives us momentum for next season so that has to be the aim".

That upsurge in recent results. We suddenly hit form any idea why?

“I think sometimes that happens in teams. Players start playing better, and the team starts connecting a bit more than they used to.  Then you get the  points from it and confidence just grows. We’ve always believed in each other. We are a good team and when things gelled the goals followed but also we started defending better as a team  and it all adds up.”

For the friendly former Villa, Farsley and Hereford striker, the season has gone from strength to strength.

“It took me a while really. Obviously everyone everyone wants to play, so everyone's going to be frustrated if they're not in the team. I couldn’t get a run going but you know that  when you do get on you have to make the most of it to stay in  the team as much as possible. So control the things you can control, work hard and give it your best each time, that’s all you can do".

You had a reputation for being versatile, able to play out wide or through the middle. Have you now proven that you are an out and out striker?

“I think so: I’m always happy to play anywhere but since  I was a young boy at Villa I always played more as a striker. It’s probably the position I feel  the most comfortable and where I feel like I can be myself better than anywhere else".

But being a striker in this league comes with its fair share of hard knocks and bruises...

“No, that's okay. I think that comes with all football. It’s no different in this league. You do get fouled playing up front but hopefully that’s because you are too fast for them, and that means you can get away from your marker more often. So, I'll just start making sure to do that!

“Touch wood I'm good physically. I’m  just happy that we’re a bit closer to  being safe  but we've still got 2 more games to go, so we can't be looking forward too far yet. But I always try to play with a smile on my face and I’m enjoying my football at the moment. We are doing the thing that we love and I'm always going to be happy while I'm playing football.”

OFF THE BALL

CHRIS WILLIAMS

Last programme of the season then and before I say a few thank yous I wanted to give a brief update on the digital programme.

I promised to keep both regular readers up to speed with this when we changed from printed to online in the summer so it’s only right to give you a few figures. By the end of last season the printed programme was selling about 50 copies per game and average sales for the season were around 7% of the attendance. Costs to produce the programmes were about £2 per copy to produce , and you have to order more than you need so let’s say we ordered 60, that’s £120 to produce, and selling for £4 meant we broke even if we sold them all

I’ve taken out any hours of my own time to make it but it takes me about 16 hours to do a 32 page programme. The online version takes me about 4, although I put more in than that because I like doing it. There is no printing cost, obviously, and to date this season there have been 3,697 downloads. The average is 24% of the crowd reading it. I know that’s not a direct comparison: a lot of those downloads are now from people who don’t come to the game, but the principle is the same: more readers mean better exposure for commercial partners, as well as more people to point out my spelling mistooks.

Let's say then that three times as many people read the digital programme and it saves the club money. I’m not ruling out a return to a printed version. I still love them. But we’ll have a closer look at those figures over the summer and let you know.

And all those extra hours I have clawed back have led to more time with my family, right?

Nope.

I remain obsessed with football and just repurpose those extra hours, so once again I want to thank The Current Mrs Williams for putting up with that and being so understanding. Much of the programme this season has been written in the waiting rooms at the John Radcliffe Hospital and a nursing home in Burcot while she visited her poorly father. A spectacular demonstration if needed of how I get my priorities wrong every single season and show little sign of changing .

In between all this I've nurtured the world's first homing squirrel: I have captured him and released him in Aylesbury, then Oxford, and most recently at the Services at Wheatley. Each time he was back in my loft within 48 hours. I may have to take his map away.

I want to thank Squirrel Nutkins but also want to thank everyone behind the scenes who make matchdays such fun. It’s been tough at times this season but everyone has stayed cheerful, the smiles have never slipped and you can’t fake the friendship that you will spot between the staff here. Even Shaun has his plus points.

I want to thank all of our club partners for their friendship as well. A club at this level relies on backing and support from its local businesses and those long term partners and new faces have made my job easy this season. Expect me to come asking you all to renew very soon!

Big things are planned for this club and if I can play a small part then I will give it everything, as always. But first a reminder not to come up and say 'Season's over. Time for a rest for you, then. You don't do anything until August'. The hard work starts on the final whistle today...
